Outlook pst File

I have just imported my Outlook 2003 pst file into Outlook 2007 on a new machine. This is the method I used.
File > Import and export > outlook > import from another
program or file > Personal Folder File (.pst) and then I simply directed it
to where the original PST file is located.

The import imported all my folders and address book but none of my email accounts.

I thought that Outlooks pst file held all that information & from what I've read, PST files from outlook 2003 are fully compatible with 2007... ?

Are the accounts stored in another file or has anyone any idea where I'm screwing up?

no you will need to manually configure all the email accounts again.

it only retains the account info if you upgraded from 2003 to 2007 but not if your importing emails from a pst file to a fresh clean install of 2007..

Hmm! So if I do configure the email accounts in 2007 and backup the pst file then, will that pst file contain the email accounts if I were to import it to a clean install of 2007 at a later date?

Surely the emaill accounts are stored somewhere?

Mail account info would be stored in Profile, .pst is just personal mail repository, and stores no config info.

So the account config settings are actually stored in the registry?

Yes, they are. You can export these settings and import on another machine, but it is not recommended.

Better grab Nirsoft's MailPassView, it will reveal all relevant deatils for each account, such as user name, password, server and port settings (your Anti-Virus software might go berserk, some don't like password revealing programs) and then export the results to TXT or HTML. MPV is not limited to Outlook, it works with any popular mail client.

Were you sure to include all subfolders in the original .pst export?

It doesn't include all folders by default.

There was no original pst export. I just located the pst file on the original machine and copied it directly to the new machine (across my network).

Then I imported it and yes, it did have all the folders.

I won't be working offline so won't need to synchronize.

They have a whole rake of useful stuff there, If you want the whole lot in one bundle, get the NirSoft Launcher. And if that is not enough then there is WSCC (aslo available as portable). WSCC combines the complete Nirsoft and Sysinternals suites in one handy launcher GUI.
