Just wondering if there are many people out there or people you know of who have applied for and been succesful finding work via websites like irishjobs, Fas, adverts.ie etc etc.

I have applied for lierally dozens and dozens of jobs and have yet to get anything more than an automated email confirmation from them despite having quite extensive experience and applying for roles I would consider myself overqualified for even.

It's hugely frustrating, this is on top of being registered with recruitment agencies who are supposed to be actively trying to find you a position.

It's easy to think there are just no jobs out there right now, if there are I can't find them. :(

Im in the same situation op, I have applied countless times on the sites above and on many other sites, Rapido, monstor.ie, jobs.ie, Findajob agent., aswell as being reg with loads of agencies. I have gone in to see agents also for usual chat and cv review etc, but as yet nothing has come up.

It is very frustrating. I have received a few replys to say we are considering you application but rarely hear anything else. Actually received a written response by post the other day, it was a job refusal but i was delighted that some companys have the decency to reply by post. Might frame it !

Anyway, I dont think your alone in your frustration, I just think a lot of people are applying for the same positions.

Hopefully something will come your way. ( and mine )

My friend applied through irishjobs.ie to a company for Childcare tutoring , they got in touch two years ago , very impressed with her CV asked her for copies of her qualifications to be faxed straight away . She did , they said they'd be in touch but never got back to her . So last year she applied again to the same job advertised , twice that year got contacted for yet more copies of her qualifications and off she faxed them again . Once more they called her for her cv and Certs in 2011. Roll on to 2012 ,she saw a few more similar jobs advertised with a different companies . Out of the blue , the original company called her again again requesting her cv and qualifications . Funny thing was she had changed her mobile number and there was no way they could have got her new number . So they must be operating under a couple of company names so be aware that sometimes these jobs don't even exist in multitude that you see them in . In case of my friend the only thing I can say is that the company was using her for her qualifications in order to get a tender ?

I appiled for jobs both on FAS Irishjobs&jobs.ie I got two PFO leters at the time which imo was a success:D considering the amount of jobs that I applied for without even getting a reply.
Then last year one of the companies who sent me the PFO called me for an interveiw& assesment which I passed with flying colours got offered the job but at the time I was temping with a company who I want to work for so I declined the full time position and I'm still waiting to get a full time job with the company who I still temp for.

Any tips in regards to writing cover letters?

I didn't think they were as important as usually it's just a load of well written waffle about how much you want to work for them etc. I would have thought what was in your cv was what mattered most as you're going to be meeting the employer at interview to chat about your reasoning for applying etc.

Would appreciate any advice on writing them though, anything that helps!

Another thing to look out for with your C.V when applying for jobs is that some companies use computers to scan the C.V looking for certain words that would be in the job spec.

Cover letters are VERY important. Don't tell them you want to work for them, tell them why they should want YOU to work for them. Tell them what they will get from hiring you, not just what will benefit you. This is the purpose of a cover letter.

They really are important. The biggest reason being (at the moment) they can make your job application stand out from the million other job applications they receive.

I have just been given an offer from a role I originally found on Irishjobs.ie . However I never apply through these websites or agencies if I can help it. Once I know the company I will apply through their web site and submit a tailored CV for the type of role offered but in their "upload a CV" section and send a cover letter that would naturally lead to the role I am interested in.

I also secured interviews from a roles I found on jobs.ie and used the same method.

Agree with others re:having an excellent cover letter. I receive a lot of applications on a daily basis and end up canning a lot of them because of a woeful cover letter. Sometimes its not even a letter but more so a note in an email , recent examples would include:

'I am unemployed and looking for any kind of job',
    'Please accept my CV'
'I want to apply for this job but what are the wages?'

Even many people who do go to the effort of writing one end up messing it up by talking all about their achievements and how motivated they are. Wrong, wrong, wrong. A cover letter should show the research you have done into the company and identify how your skills and qualifications will be of use to the employer. Show the employers that you are the missing link in their chain, give them reasons as to why they need you and how you intend to improve their bottom line.

A cover letter is your introduction to an employer, someone who you want to pay you €25k, or €35k or even €50k per year. You need to convince them that you and you alone are the person who is worth opening their purse strings for.

A really good cover letter is a powerful piece of prose that convinces an employer that you are a person they need to be talking with. The very best of candidates I come across have cover letters that are absolutely captivating to the point that a recruiter gets the urge to pick up the phone to talk with them.

If your cover letter isn't achieving that then you need to do a review of it.

    Well said, agree fully.

Don't worry, OP, the art of the cover letter is a skill that can be honed. :) There's loads of great advice out there. One word of advice though, avoid US job-hunting advice sites, stick to UK and Ireland ones, they are more in tune with what's required over here.
