Looking for advise please. Dealer is selling an 09 vw passat - high spec - with asking price of 17,950 - how much do you think I can get him down to? I have nothing to trade - car written off - and I have cash... :)

its the new 1.4 122hp petrol model and has 40k km on it - it is in very good condition... but have just lost money on the write off (other guy's fault) and am trying to keep the cost down - thanks for your help

That's expensive for a petrol 09 Passat regardless of the spec.

Bleh. No sodding engine in it. Still it's a popular one, but I wouldn't give him a penny over €16,000 - every dealer has fields of them these days, and here you are with no trade-in and a roll of notes thick enough to choke a bull. He'd have to be a complete idiot to let you out the door again without a sale.

if he's looking for 18k the chances of 13k are slim.

You never know your luck in a small town. As far as I can see a lot of dealers are still in Celtic Tiger Muppetland.

For a 09 1.4 pasrat? I think so too! You wouldn't find it hard to get an 09 diesel for 15k

    2009 1.4 Highline here asking €14k:
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1413276670303970

And it has full leather seats as opposed to the Highline's standard half leather.

€18k should be buying you a 2010 model. BTW the 1.4 has 122bhp and a turbo, it can hold it's own in the Passat.

It actually is good in the Passat though. I've covered a few thousand motorway miles in a few of them and they are more than adequate. That engine is a cracker for its size and reliable too. Will do close on 40mpg too on the motorway.
