CPU Over Temp Error

bit of a strange one here guys. my new pc suddenly is giving me CPU Over Temp Error on start up with an option to go to setup using F1. BIOS gives a temp of 70 odd degrees which starts dropping to mid 50's straight away. in windows core temp starts off reading up near 80 and then levels out in the 50s aswell. up until today i was getting temps in the mid 30s. what could be causing this???

    spec is:
i7 2600k 3.4ghz with stock heat sink (~1500rpm according to BIOS)
    asus p8 z68-vgen3 MoBo
    16GB RAM
    Window 7 64bit

dunno what else is relevant so just ask for more info if needed

    thanks

incorrectly installed cooler, excessive use of thermal paste, poor airflow. etc. there are numerous possibilities.

cooler has been working fine for last few weeks so shouldnt have come loose but has been reinstalled (see below)
thermal paste definatly wasnt over used as it was pre applied to the cooler that came with the cpu
airflow is as normal as it has been last few weeks, 2x120mm front intakes, 1x120mm rear exhaust and 1x200mm side intake and all fans are clear and clean...

anyway the plot thickens...i managed to get some thermal paste of my neighbour. Coretemp is now reading 39-40, bit higher than originally but better than before however i still got the CPU Over Temp Error on startup even though BIOS was reading mid 30s. now i'm really confused...

sensor error is also possible. RMA issue if so on either the board or the CPU. Ouch.

    there lies your problem

the stock cpu pastes strip that comes with the cpu cooler is crap.... buy some thermal paste (Artic silver) in pc world and remove the cpu cooler and cpu and clean them both carefully then reseat the cpu and apply a thin layer of artic silver paste onto the cpu ensuring all of the cpu surface has a nice even coating. then remount the cpu cooler. connect up the fan then fire the pc up.

To be fair the thermal paste isnt the best but i doubt its so bad as to have the chip overheating.

it depends... OP said he already removed the heatsink once before... once air gets to it it dries out thus reducing its efficiency

artic silver doesnt dry out unlike those stock paste strips.

True enough, lifting it off is not good. Still not sure its enough to have the processor running over temp on idle though!

yeah i did remove the heatsink but i cleaned of the stock paste and replaced it with some i got of a neighbour and i still got higher than normal temps and the Over Temp Error.

seems to have sorted itself out now though, temps are currently between 35-37 degrees and i havent got the error in a few days, hopefully things be ok. gonna be investing in a better heatsink soon anyway, looking at a few water coolers but i think its gonna be ok for a while once i keep an eye on it...
