    Anyway,

I went from a B5 1.9 TDI Passat with an incredible amount of miles on the clock to a D-4D 2.0 Avensis TR (UK)

She doesn't drive as well as the Passat. The Passat I found was a bit of a bruiser and would dog along through everything. The downside to that was when it all went wrong it did so with a nice bang on my pocket.

Whilst I went from a 130BHP TDI to an equal 2.0 Avensis I don't find the lift when the foot is down as satisfying.

The Avensis is also like most other Toyotas... Boring.... I literally find myself bored to tears when driving Toyota's.

That said, it's calmed my driving style down a lot and I just sit back and cruise in the comfort safe in the knowledge that my life is almost over and soon I will be wearing Cardigans.

I'm happy with my Toyota. It does everything I want and it isn't costing me an arm and a leg to maintain.

Generally Toyota Petrols are 1.6 and 1.8 in Avensis and 2.0 and 2.2 in Diesel..... I assume you test drove a 2.0 D-4D. Got any links of the motor you're looking at?

what does the Passat have inside that the Avensis doesn't to justify calling the avensis boring?

he may have been looking at the mk1 avensis diesel... which were 19xx cc's, basically a 2.0 but could easily be twisted to a 1.9 for a sales pitch.

MugMugs is right. They are mindnumbingly boring to drive, to look at, and to be in. They are to quote Clarkson a "shapeless lump" of metal.

They're actually a fine car, but they confirm every Toyota stereotype about blandness.

The Passat is hardly any fun either but at least there is a feelgood factor to its cabin (well on the older ones anyway).

thats kind of what i was getting at, i think its unfair to call the avensis dull whilst comparing it to a passat. you wouldn't drive either for kicks really. both very mundane just in different ways.

    :D

Comparing Passat B5 to Avensis you can easily say Avensis is boring.

I had two B5s because it's least boring in that segment.

and yes Toyotas are cheaper to maintain.

You obviously didn't drive a Ford Mondeo or Mazda 6 then.

Never liked appeal of Mondeo (previous models) so didn't even bother to drive it but Mazda 6 MPS was loads of fun. Must be nice with smaller engines too.

Avensis 2.0 D4d is such a better engine to the 1.9TDI, it may seem down on power at the start, but that is just because it has linear power delivery and will rev right to the red line.

Again, both the Avensis and Passat are mind numbling boring, which is exactly how a they are meant to be, and there is nothing wrong with that. Get an elise as a weekend car if you want exciting.

My point was both drive and handle better than a Passat or Avensis of similar vintage, even in bog standard form.

OH had Avensis and I drove a Passat both are decent enough but dull as dishwater. Now in a 2.0 Insignia SC and it is a joy to drive. Loves all road conditions and packed with extras. Ace motor and great build quality.
