went over a couple of hours, thought the standard was decent no bull really stood out for me to be honest. Huge crowd and the trade was strong and some bulls not sold at what I thought decent money 3k+. The champ heifer was a serious animal, didn't hang around to see her in the ring read wasn't sold at 5k after...
I'm looking to get back into cattle after 5 year planned hiatus, Charolais really are still the bees knees I think...

judging was hit and miss - mostly miss, some good straight bulls that could be picked up right enough, thought the heifers were poor enough tbh

In carrick on shannon the judging was wayward....overall champion bull made about half what highest price bull made!!.....the man buying is the best judge.

What does that say about linear scoring? Some of those judges are scorers

the animal judged the champion is generally a top class animal, even though another animal or 2 could beat him in price, the judge will have a more critical eye than the farmer, he looks for muscle, style, length, correctness, head, and how the animal walks and stands.

Sure i often seen a plain CF52 sired bull makin 5 grand!

Not saying I know anything about judging stock but often times the man buying is very capable of taking account of linear scoring, muscle fat depth, correctness of gait etc etc...Judges have a circuit....and its not hard for a breeder who shows regularly to drop something to a judge.....as said Breeder may be judging the other mans stock in a sale in a few months after.....its very rarely a breeder in any breed of cattle or sheep wins a rosette if they are not in the golden circle....but thats life.

I think your thinking a bit too much into it, That said we've had a bull that made a 5 figure sum that that didn't get a ribbon atall :P

TBH I am not reading anything into judging, its one mans opinion on any given day...but you would want to be very naive as a Small Ped breeder with a good animal...up against a big well known breeder with very similiar animal in going for a rosette....The big man numbers wise will win 8 times out of 10 which is kinda wrong.

No have enough ground to carry good bit more stock. Reason for the cattle idea is grass management (and interest), would prob need a new shed though maybe not year one but defo year 2 as would like to finish calves...
Think if ran 15/20 sucklers along with the sheep would make grass management easier, and also add little diversity:) At this stage though its more a medium plan than immediate....

Wasn't at it myself either, just read report in the IFJ this week. He was on the front cover of the IFJ also at the end of December with three nice bulls, could very well be the same ones he had out in Tullamore. Great fronts to them.
