How long is a piece of string? ;)

It depends on the size of the disk, the speed of the disk and the amount of data.

Did you let the disk check run and still get this error?

I skipped by pressing down one of the keys. On average how long would it take?

Usually a couple of minutes, not that long as its only a short test. I'd be backing up data and running diagnostics on the hard disk as well though, doesn't sound good! Although could be a case of simple software corruption triggering it

Let it run and if it goes away then all is well.

There is really no telling, a few minutes up to an hour, in some cases even longer.

Safest bet is to run a full scan over night or something iirc the command prompt command is:

    chkdsk /f /r

this will create a log in the event viewer which you can check later.

HDTune is a freebie that will do the job (don't get the Pro version), A single executable file, no installation required. Run the Error Scan (clear the box Quick Scan), it will tell you if there are bad sectors on the drive. Note: this can take a few hours, again depending on the speed and size of the disk.

Ah now, didn't think you're in the business of scaring people. ;)

The cause for a disk to be flagged "dirty" is far more often an improper shutdown rather than toasted hardware.

I restarted the laptop and I'll just wait for the disc to be scanned

Better safe than sorry though! But yeah it could well be a minor software corruption issue from a improper shutdown or some other problem. I've had scan disk running after removing crappy (cough AVG :P ) anti virus from a machine before, weird one that

Hehe... sure, there is no harm in testing the hardware evering every now and then, even more so with a laptop which is by nature subjected to more abuse than a stationary dekstop PC.

And of course, there is no excuse for not having a decent backup strategy. Hard disks are cheap to replace, it's the losss of data that hurts. ;)

Still checking it says checking file on system c to skip disk checking press any key within 1 second :/ its been like that this hour

When you skip the scan, the laptop boots normally?

If so, grab HDTune from the link above and run an error scan. If it comes out all green, it means the disk is fine, then you can deal with the problem on the software side. No point in messing around if the disk is indeed faulty, so check this first.

Yep when I press any key it boots normally

I switched off the laptop by accident when I put it back on a start up repair window appeared and it says repairing disc errors this might take over a hour to complete

As I said backup your data then scan the disk, it sounds to me like you may have a drive failing

Can I not just clear everything off the hard-drive? ie perform a factory reset?

If data is not important/or is already backed up the next step I would do is running a relyable hard disk diagnostics scan. Check out UBCD for some diagnostic tools

Yeah basically I just use the laptop for browsing the internet and playing football manager so I can afford to wipe the hard-drive like.

Will that Ulitmate Boot CD wipe everything off the hard-drive? or what will it do.?

I'm after restarting the computer a few times and the problem has gone away no error screen :)

Nope, all it will do is run a diagnostics scan. You just boot off it choose>HDD>Diagnostics and choose one such as Seatools for DOS and do a long scan :)

No, it won't, although it comes with plenty tools which can do exactly that. ;)

UBCD is a mighty set of tools, but if your not comfy with it, HDTune works within your Windows environment, just start the scan and let it finish the job, then you'll know whether the hard disk is faulty or not. Also check the Health tab for any anomalies.
