Played Cobh GC out past fota there the other day.Great course. They have four different tees Black, blue, white or yellow so can be as tough a test as you want it 7000 yards from the blacks, was in fantastic condition, ball didnt plug once and was hopping mad down the fairways. Greens are absoloutely gorgeous, a lot of undulations but roll so true and quick.

    Any Cobh members here?

Was there a serious score shot around Cobh in the open singles last week? Friend of mine said he heard 60 gross!!! I'm presuming this should be 60 nett maybe?

I'm not a member of Cobh GC but I think I'll be taking it up in 2013. I really like it.

Played the open singles competition on last Friday. 38 Points won that competition and looking at their website no sign of a 60 nett anywhere.

My playing partner happened to have a hole in one on the 10th, their signature hole. I've never had one or never saw one before....

    last 4 open winning scores 38, 40, 42, 36

He sent me on a pic of the scorecard that's on howdidido for that open competition. The score is for the 26th. An away player so not sure of handicap. But it works out at 42 points which is strange. I can't make sense of it

42 points with a 60. So he/she is playing off of +6? Doubt it :)

As an aside, anyone got an opinion on Cobh? Members and non-members.

I've never played Cobh yet even though I only live about 20 mins away. But I've heard mostly good things about it. By all accounts €790 for membership is excellent value

I am a member in Cobh having joined 12 months ago.

I assume that 60 score was somebody messing around on the computer as the winning result on the club website is 38 points. However 59 Nett did win a medal event last month

At €790 and no entrance fee it is definitely good value for money in comparison to other courses close to the city.

Played there twice last year and liked it, it has some great holes but to be honest the con's outweigh the positives:
    1. No Clubhouse
    2. Very Hilly
    3. Rough is really thick in places(Overly so)

Interesting, I have a different perspective on this.
I'm not someone that would use the clubhouse much but it seems fine inside in it and by all accounts, the food served there is excellent.
There are a few tough climbs in it alright but I dont find it overly hilly. The climb up the 18th is a killer though.
Certainly didn't find the rough overly thick. Its thick is spots where you shouldnt be alright but either side of the fairway, its pretty standard.

Didn't know they did food to be honest, inside the prefabs? Maybe that was not an option when I played last year!

I think the 2 really big climbs are The Index 1 5th and the 18th.

In saying that I really enjoyed the greens with their different levels and the island green Par 3 is a superb novelty hole.

I would definitely consider joining if I was on the other side of town.

There is no +6 handicapper in Ireland. +5 is the lowest at the moment

That the guy Deegan who used to play inter county football?

Nice course, very playable with plenty of room on a lot of the holes, particularly the back nine. Fairways handle the weather very well, but greens hard to hold. Nice track, worth a visit.

    Hi SSBob,

Since you played it last we have put in a clubhouse - Not a permanent one but far superior to the prefabs we had before. There is food served as well and as has been mentioned it's excellent quality (and value)

As for the rough, we have cut most of the heavy stuff away so you'll always find your ball unless you are way off line alltogether.

Can't do much about the hills I'm afraid but there are only two tough climbs on the course which isnt bad as the place is built on the side of a hill and if you didn't have the hills you wouldn't have those views.

Maybe this is my problem :D

I will definitely play it again soon on your recomendation. I do like the green complexes and the Par 3's are all good holes!

Are there any open singles coming up here? Would like to play it. Doesn't seem to be any opens on the GUI site.

Just wondering are those comps still qualifying? Any winter rules yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭paulos53

I played at the weekend and it was a qualifying comp.
Placing on the fairways but play as it lies everywhere else.

No I just saw it in an interview with him in a Sunday newspaper around the time of the all Ireland football final.
I've never heard of him in the big amatuer events so maybe he's just a +5 h'cap around his own course
