    Hi Bernie

I am in the same boat as you, i am looking to go to South America in September but i will also be on my own. It is a little bit scary but im sure it's easy enough to meet people.

    Hi Bernie,
You might want to take a look at TravBuddy, it matches up people who are looking for travel partners.

Also, try not to worry about safety in the US and Canada (not excessively anyway). In my experience, most areas are pretty safe. Just make sure to research each city before you go to find out the areas to avoid, tripadvisor would be good for that.

    Have fun!

It could be helpful to get on to a site like Couchsurfing.org to make a few local contacts, too. It's mostly people who offer travellers a free bed or couch at their home but there are also people on there who offer to meet up with visitors in their city and help them out with whatever they need to know. It can be really helpful having a local perspective, or just nice to talk to someone new. A friend of mine used the site when he was in New York for New Year's and he was whisked away by a trust-fund baby to a roof-top party in Manhattan with all the food and wine he could handle! So, it can be a really great experience.

I am due to travel in 6 weeks for 7 weeks. Was meant to be doing it with a friend who has now bailed on me. Is there anyone that can give me advise or would be willing to help out so I'm not alone!
