    Hi all,
I installed some Hitachi camera software during the week and was going to use my digital camera as a pc-webcam, but ever since I did when I plug any device into any USB port it re-boots my computer. Can anyone help me with this problem, as I cant put photos on my pc or music from my pc to my mp3 player etc.
    Thanks...

Its likely causing a blue screen error, which in turn is set to reboot automatically. Lets change this so the blue screen stays which will help with diagnosing:
Right click on my Momputer/Computer in Start Menu>Properties. On XP click on Advanced Tab>Startup and Recovery Settings: Untick "Automaticly Restart" then re insert the device until you get the BSOD.
On Vista/7 In the computer properties choose>"Advanced system Settings" on the left menu>Startup & Recovery, untick "Automatic restart."
When the bluescreen appears let us know the STOP code, that is the code in the bottom left looks like 0xXXXXXX and also the error such as PAGE_FAULT etc.

    Hi thanks for the reply,
I have Windows XP and done what you said but when I plugged in Memory stick (but it is any device I use in usb port) the pc shutdown with a Grey screen but NO messages at all and after a few moments I just removed the memory stick and pressed the power button for 5 seconds to shut it down and then restart---maybe I didnt wait long enough for the message,-If I didnt I will try it again tomorrow, or if you think it is something else I would appreciate your help again....thanks again

    Hi Nick,
It happens when I use any of the front usb ports on my HP pavillion a710,
but the webcam which is in one of the back usb ports still works fine so I have not messed with them.
    Thanks again

Is the USB shorting out the computer?

Does the computer just drop straight away like someone pulled the plug?

Its faulty hardware almost certainly, try the camera in another machine?

Nope dont think is that as all was perfect until I installed Hitachi software by Mediaone and then after that things went wrong! The only thing that does not reboot the pc is the webcam which has been connected for years, I turned on the power on the printer and it rebooted it too, anything connected to ANY other USB port will just crash the pc and make it reboot, but not the BLUE SCREEN...I disconnected the webcam and tried all again today but still the same.I tried system restore too.I checked all the USB ports on device manager and they were reported as working properly...I just dont want to have to bring my PC for repair as I was hoping someone here had seen this problem before and it is probably quite simple but Im only a novice at computers..:o...

If you power on the pc with a USB device already attached do the front ports work ok once the PC boots?

On some (averagely built) PCs static discharge can cause the PC to reboot when something is plugged into the front USB ports, it happens to me the odd time but only with externally powered usb devices like hard drives (and even at that only if the hard drive is plugged to the wall before the usb cable is inserted, not the other way around). Never have any problems with memory sticks or usb power only devices.

If static is the cause, most of the time it is due to faulty front panel/case insulation or grounding, where any static buildup that is released as you plug a usb device triggers a signal on the cable connected to the reset button, which the motherboard interprets as a signal to reboot.

No easy fixes but something that might just work, if static is the problem, is plugging in the USB cable by itself first and only afterwards (fingers crossed it has not rebooted by this point) attaching the other end of the cable to the camera or other problem device and powering it on.

It is strange that it only recently started happening, which suggests that static may not be the problem at all (That or the onset of this problem may just be coincidential with the software installation).

    (ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY)'?

The subject problem will occur if Windows XP (32-bit) is installed on a computer that supports hardware-enforced DEP (Data Execution Prevention) and you have a legacy hardware DVD decoder that uses the Mpegport.sys driver.

    To workaround this problem:

    01. Restart your computer.

    02. Press F8 to display the Startup menu.

    03. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

    04. Use Start / Run / Devmgmt.msc / OK to open Device Manager.

    05. On the View menu, select Show hidden devices.

    06. Expand Non-Plug and Play Drivers.

    07. Right-click the Mpegport.sys driver and press Properties.

    08. Select the Driver tab.

    09. Change the Startup Type to Disabled.

    10. Press OK.

    11. Restart your computer.

To resolve this problem, ask the driver vendor for an updated Mpegport.sys driver.

    OR

Power supply to motherboard is insufficient

Borrow a power supply, unplug old power supply from MoBo and HDD (do not remove old power supply from case at this stage) and just plug in the borrowed power supply.

If power supply resolves problem, then get new power supply and then remove old power supply fron case and fit new power supply, an easy job for DIY

Hi old_aussie, thanks for your reply-I was away and just got it...
Tried what you said to do but when I Expand Non-Plug and Play Drivers, there is NO mpegport.sys there-could it be under something else? (told you I was a novice...lol)
    Thanks again
