Can i use a audio track for a kick drum to trigger a midi track with a different kick sample or will i have to go in and place a kick anytime the drum is hit?

The gate that comes with Reaper, ReaGate, can also do this and I think can be downloaded seperately for free. Another free option is KT Drum Trigger.
There's some good videos on YouTube of people using it to trigger samples as they beatbox or drum on tables and other surfaces.

There's also Drumagog and Steven Slate's 'Trigger'

Actually a combo of Massey's DRT and Drumagog or Trigger works great. Using DRT to print clicks means you have to work far less when using drumagog or trigger on intricate snare tracks eg with lots of ghost notes.

As a side note drumagog comes with more natural sounding samples to my ears, the Slate Samples have a particular sound. If you are doing American raaawwk stuff the Slate stuff is amazing probably not so great if you are going for more jazzy/natural vibe.

DRT and something like superior drummer or BFD is also a fantastic option.

Cubase 6 has this feature built in along with a huge library of drum samples.
Since Cubase6 I stopped using drumagog

For feature count Pro Tools is really behind.

    Logic does it natively too.

That's the kind of thing a lot of hardware samplers used to offer. So you could do your drum replacing, the easy way.

Lot of setting up and arssing around with discs and memory. A lot less intuitive than a modern ITB solution. Plus there was always a variable latency caused by MIDI itself, and the actual triggering algorithm was not perfect. The Massey is infinitely better than any hardware I've ever used. Even the Audio to MIDI facility that's been in Logic for years, is better than any hardware.

Off the top of my head
    Toontrack drumtracker
    Aptrigga
    Drumagog
    Trigger
    DRT
    Sound Replacer

Reaper has a beta version of one too.
I use a combination of an audio->midi converter and reasamplmatic5000 on Reaper. Unforunately it's not multisample but it does what I want as I rarely use just samples, I almost always blend them in with a real close mic track so I don't get that fake machine gun sound
