Conti GP4000s, a steal here for €28.50. €40 most everywhere else.

I've used theses and there great

Alternatives: The venerable gatorskin (Wet grip is debatable, some people swear by them, I've had the rear slide out on me on we tarmac with them)

I read the review as well and bought a pair of the michelin krylion from crc when they were on offer a few months ago. After about 3 weeks I had to replace the rear tyre after a puncture in the middle of the "protective strip" which left a gash in the tyre. about 2 weeks later the front went as well, cut up to peices.
Have gone back to continental grand prix/ gp4000.

Just ordered two Continental GP4000S and two Continental Supersonic tubes for €78.93 inc delivery from bike-discount.de

The exact same order from CRC would total €115, so a good deal!!

    Here's the link: http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k373/a4826/grand-prix-4000-s-23-622-mm-black.html?mfid=77

    Thanks for the advice!

i have been using the krylion carbons for the last year, thousands of miles on them and still in "as new" condition, i guess you can be unlucky with tyres but i feel they are the best for all round ccycling/racing followed closely by the conti GP 4 seasons.

Have to say that I am very happy with Michelin Pro Race 3s - I even use the light version and have had two punctures in the last year.

I haven't tried the new Pro Race 4s yet - would be interested to here peoples views on them.

For sure, the only tyre that lasts on Donegal roads.

If you can get the GP4000 for €28.50 that is a steal and much better than the Michelin Krylion.

I've got Schwalbe Ultremos for €25 before, which I prefer to the GP4000, but that was in a sale. Actually a quick search shows bike-discount.de have Ultremos for under €30: choose between the DD for puncture protection or the ZX for ultimate lightness, grip and speed. For general Irish road use I'd probably take the DD.

At full price, the Krylion Carbons, which I use on my commuter/training bike, are great tyres. Tough, roll well, reasonable grip and great value.

At €28.50, I'd go for the gp4000's. Great tyres.

If money is a bit tight the Conti Grand Prix's here are great value at €18.95

These have the same black chili compound as the GP4000s (so same level of grip) but have Poly X Breaker belt rather than Vectran which makes them about 20g heavier per tyre (still very light though). They come in a 22c and 24c size so you can put the 22c on the front and the 24c on the back as in their far more expensive Attack/Force combination tyre set.

The Gp4000S was always my tyre of choice but I had my first spin on Pro Race 3's today and they fairly zip along I have to say.
What are they like in the wet?
GP4000S always felt stable on a wet road.

Pro Race 3 have a lovely feel and lovely grip. However, they absolutely shred to pieces very quickly on Irish roads. This is their only downside, but it's a big one. Both GP4000s and Ultremos are much more durable.

Good race tyre but not for everyday use, IMO.

+1, i got about 1500km out of my pro 3 before they were getting too dangerous. Others complain the ultremo's arent that durable either but like blorg i personally have found them great. I find the ZX's unbelievable to ride on but still durable (in the summer anyway)

Merlin have Ultremo ZX for under €30 each: Link.

I like pro race 3's and find them reasonably durable.
Have Ultremo Zx at the moment and like the way they handle.
Vittoria corsa cx are my favourites but they cut to pieces very quickly on the "roads around north County"

I stuck a set of open evo sc (I think - tan side walls anyway) onto the race bike and really like them. Got them from jedi sports for € 33 I think so a fraction over budget but very pleased so far.
