I'm looking at getting my Dad a new Hi Fi system for his birthday. I'm up to date on most other technology but kinda lost touch with advancing sound systems over the last few years!

    Price range approx €350-450
Doesn't need anything overly fancy on it like ipod docking or any of that. Just a really crisp clear sound.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Cheers

depends on what you mean by a hi-fi system , do you want an amp, cd player and speakers or do you want an all in 1 box made by the likes of jvc, sony etc

With the budget I'm looking at I'm probably looking at an all in one box

best thing to do is go into currys or harvey normans and listen to a system what ever sounds good to you will be ok im sure if it can deliver good bass response thats probably best to look out for

How about something like this? http://www.richersounds.ie/asp/product.asp?ObjectID=938&Mode=0&CategoryID=48&sub=49&productid=1058
Denon are a pretty good brand so you'll be sorted for sound quality. There's lots of decent speakers to go with it on the site, even with delivery you should come in well under €400 total.

Yeah I was looking the Denon alright. I was going to get it through amazon but they don't deliver to Ireland. Is my best bet to get them from richersounds or http://www.superfi.co.uk/p-2395-denon-dm38dab-micro-system.aspx??

Any recommendations on speakers? Looking at http://www.whathifi.com/review/denon-d-m38dab, they recommend 3 speakers to go with the Denon C38
    1. Tannoy Mercury V1s
    2. Mission MX1s
    3. Dali Zensor 1

    Cheers for the info

hard to judge without hearing , sounds like they are saying the missions are very bright, might be better avoid them, but what you are looking at should really please your dad

Yeah it depends on personal preference really. Some people prefer a bass-heavy sound for instance, while others prefer a more neutral presentation. I'd go with richersounds myself as they're better known & have a bricks & mortar store in Belfast as well as delivery service. They have a section on this site (in the "talk-to" part of Biz) so you could ask a question there & a rep could advise you on the right speaker pairing based on your budget. They seem to be pretty decent customer-service wise.

Went with superfi in the end. Worked out a bit cheaper. Cheers for the help. Looking forward to listening to them when they arrive.
