There is an option on my profile page to start an album. I have had a hunt round and can't find anyone with a (public) album, or any info. So, I presume this is to upload photos, but can pics that you want to show in a thread be taken from this album? I have seen reference to having to put pics in such as Picasso in order…

Yes, you can. When you upload a pic it'll even give you the BB code for it.
