Should my oil burner do this?

When I switch on the central heating the burner goes on and off more often than I think it should. There's no problem with hot water but the rads never get really hot so I'm wondering what if anything might be wrong.
For pig iron the other day I timed it from cold over half an hour:
    On 7min 30sec
    Off 5min 10sec
    On 3min 50sec
    Off 6min 50sec
    On 3min 30sec
    Off 7min 30sec
And it continued to switch on and off after I stopped counting.
I know very little if anything about heating systems so I don't know if its' meant to run like this but I would have thought that the burner would run continuously for maybe 15 or 20 minutes to begin with and then when everything is hot start going on and off as needs be.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

You have lack of circulation which is either caused lack of water, or a faulty circulating pump. I suspect your pump needs to be replaced.

Thanks aujopimur. Is there anything I can do to confirm this? I'm renting so I'll be trying to convince the landlord that something needs to be done.

It could also be that the boiler stat is set too low. Another option might be check the speed setting on the pump, is it set at 1,2,or 3.

also the balancing valve on the cylinder could be open to much.

The handle of a brush ,or something similar is the most reliable gauge.

It would airlock and go to lockout, then you will come back to boards and we'll tell you how to clear it. ;)

You would be better off starting a new thread telling us the make and model and your problem, there are for greater minds than mine who will nail your problem for you.

buy an 'apollo' or 'watchman' in your local diy shop (woodies etc.) and are very easy fit, sender on your tank, receiver on a plugtop in the house about €60-80
