    Holy Christ on a bike, 375bhp, 550lb/ft torque and 45mpg and 165g/km!

Chances are it won't make RHD conversion although as article states a RWD model might be on the cards..

    :D

Prob won't be on sale here on the basis that BMW don't sell any X models in Ireland.

That's true but they may bring a RWD RHD model to the UK and hopefully into Ireland too. I just cannot get over the figures.. 4.7 seconds 0-60!?!

After seeing 0-60 in 4.7 I was thinking this must have been a big V8 engine. Only a 3.0 I6. Incredible stuff.

I can't see any justification in making a RWD version just for the Irish and British market. Hopefully they will just make the X version in RHD.

It is incredible to get that 0-60 time and C02 less than 170g/km.. Incredible is it exactly.

I never understood why BMW didn't have the x-drive models in the UK or even in RHD?

You know you have just started something that has been done to death here and many other places before....

Chris Harris has a piece on the 550d over on PH

I'm sure it will be great.... until one of the three (!) turbos goes in it.

Those yokes will be fierce troublesome in a few years time, plus it's not as fast as the non M badged petrol powered 550i never mind the M5.

Jaysus it's the criticism that never stops giving - turbo failure turbo failure - you'd swear that every turbo diesel BMW fails the minute it drives out of the showroom. Technology is moving on - I think BMW have had enough experience with Turbos at this stage not to put something unreliable in their new motors.

There are 2 in my 5 series diesel with high mileage and never had a bit of bother. I've also read on another site that someone has been running one for over 450k miles and no problems.

What about the turbos in the new M5?

Of course a diesel saloon won't be as good as an M5, but it would be €480 to tax here and do double the fuel economy.. the figures cannot be argued against... :pac:

nobodys denying that, but I just think sticking an M badge on anything diesel is a bit of a letdown

At least there is something behind this M badge courtesy of the M performance division as opposed to the M badges that frequent our roads currently

Yep I see where you are coming from about a diesel M car but it's proabably inevitable at this stage. I'd say once you experienced a spin in one you might change your opinion.

The fact that you can have near supercar levels of performance one minute and then sit on the motorway at 120km/h and get 40 odd mpg is whats gonna be so appealing.

    .............. and Id buy one............

    :P

I'd have a chain of stripclubs if I could afford it.

The thing is though even BMW say it isn't a diesel M5. It's an M tuned model the same as the M-Sports versions of other models. Hence the name M550d.
Its the same as Audi's S models. Not full-on RS models, but better than the run-of-the-mill models too. BMW are doing the same.
Until it actually holds the badge M5d or even just M5, then it's not a proper M5.
To back up your argument though, it is some car. And if you were well off and were considering an M5, then you may well also consider this as a viable alternative. Not because it's a true alternative to an M5, but because it provides a significant financial argument in that it'll give you 85% of the performance, probably 300% of the fuel economy and probably will only lose 50% of it's value in 3 years as opposed to 70% of a much higher value. And while the M5 is certainly a good deal better than this, the difference will probably really only be noticeable on the track. If you just want a quick car for bringing the family around, then maybe you don't need the M5 after all!
As a car nut, I'd take the M5... but if I were super rich and had an Aventadore in the garage, then I'd probably have this instead as the daily hack!
