My husband and I have been trying for a baby for the last year, without any luck. We have been actively trying, using ovulation kits for the last 6 months. We are both in our early 30's and I have had a history of irregular periods anything from 28 to 42 day cycle. I am off the pill since 2007 and I live a fairly healthy lifestyle. I have had several pre-natal bloods and everything appears normal, although my Doctor referred me to Dr Waterstone as my 21 day progesterone has never been above 30 at it's highest it was 27.5. We went and saw Dr Kahn and had the routine tests, sperm analysis and vaginal scan. He said that we had unexplained fertility and that we were both perfectly healthy. While I was happy to hear this I was also thinking, then why can't we get pregnant. He suggested that I have a lyposcopy (can't spell) to ensure that my tubes are clear and because my periods are so irregular we would then start IUI. I found this a bit overwhelming!! I have done a lot of research myself and I am worried that my problem is not that I'm not able to get pregnant but that as a result of my low levels of Progesterone that I am unable to sustain a pregnancy? I said this to him but he said that as my periods are so irregular my bloods may not be accurate and therefore my 21 day progesterone reading might be difficult to pinpoint and 27.5 in this case is fine.
This month I did everything "right" had sex the day of ovulation and the each day after for 2 days. I stayed lying down for an hour afterwards and did not use the bathroom for a couple of hours and did not shower until the next morning (all sounds crazy I know) I am remaining positive and hopeful and of course I am convinced I am pregnant, as I have lower back pain, cramps and have slight nausea but I've had these feelings before and still got my period. Also I ovulate anytime between day 15 and 22. This month it was on day 22 and today is day 29 of my cycle so I won't know anything until next Monday at the earliest.
I am writing this in hope that you might be able to give me some suggestions, all advice welcome.

We were unexplained too, and did everything right for over a year, but the only difference was that my cycle was pretty regular, so testing the day 21 was more accurate.

I have no real advice, I'm afraid, just try to keep faith that it will happen. And it will - we got a little assistance from clomid and on the second proper try I got pregnant. So, I know all the tests and doctors are daunting, you wont care a jot once you are holding that positive test in your hands.

We are the same. It is now one year since I came off the pill and actively started ttc. My cycles were long to start but have now regularised. I did have cysts and had to have a bilateral laparoscopy but they shouldn't have affected my fertility. I had the dye run through my tubes too and they were clear. I'm due to start clomid next cycle so fingers crossed. My husband is getting sperm analysis done soon too but we did manage to get pregnant once before so this should be ok. I'm hoping neyite's clomid success is catching :)

Thank you both so much for your reponse, it meant a lot. Yellow hen it seems that we are at a simular stage and who knows maybe Neyite's success with clomid will work for us too. Thanks again. Fingers crossed I don't get my period this month xx

I wouldn't rush into IUI just because your Progesterone is a little low. There's surely other stuff that can be tried, I used clomid and it brought my progesterone right up, still didn't concieve though as we also have MFI.

Get yourself a consult with a fertility endocrinologist or get referred to a clinic, tests can take time and I wouldn't wait as some Dr.s like GPs drop the ball on such issues as they don't see infertility as a real problem. Just my opinion, I'm not trying to alarm you, I had to go through 3 GPs before one took me seriously.

At least they have done your hormone range.

I have been charting my temperatures for the past 10 months and it's great for being able to pinpoint the exact day of ovulation, so if you're not charting already maybe you could try that? I had to have a few 7DPO bloodtests myself and as I often have longer than 'normal' cycles I wouldn't have been able to pinpoint O day accurately without temping. I know that you use ovulation predictor kits but from what I understand sometimes it can be difficult to catch your surge with them and if like me you're short on other signs, then charting can be fantastic.

I bought the book 'Taking Charge of Your Fertility' on Amazon and it was surprisingly less US-centric than I expected. I also use the website based on the book (www.tcoyf.com) to chart and I find it really helpful.
