I'm 16 (17 in June) and I'm looking for somewhere that will tattoo me (pref. Dublin) Will parental consent make a difference? I know there's no actual law to stop them but most probably wont I don't want to go somewhere dodgy and get infected so is there anywhere decent?
    Thanks :D

really? oops  well if it is sorry :D

You are going to have it for the rest of your life, what's another year and a bit waiting for it?

You will find that most of the regulars here won't recommend someone who would tattoo someone who is underaged (As in still, legally, a child), I know I'm not just speaking for myself here when I say that more than a few people here would not even get tattoos themselves from an artist who was irresponsible enough to tattoo a minor.

Yeah but I'm pretty set on it, it means a lot to me so I know the design won't change :D but fair point I guess I'm just to impatient :p When I first asked my parents they said I could get something pierced but now I have a few I'm craving something more :D

Tis' sucks. I'm dying to get one done! Thanks btw :)

Looking for somewhere that will tattoo you underage is against the charter. However, you seem to be sensible enough to realise that most reputable places will not tattoo someone under 18, so appealing to this common sense,I say wait till you are at least 18. Then you will have you choice of the best artists, rather than some scratcher that will leave you with something that you will regret getting.

if you find someone to do it don't get it to big because speaking from experience you'll be looking to get it covered up in about 10 years time.

Regardless of size, please don't get it. Honestly, the chances of getting it done at a good quality are super slim. As well as that, we are all speaking from experience here, most of the folks here wanted tattoos when we were young too, but the truth is, no matter how sure you are that your opinion about what you want tattooed won't change, it probably will! Almost everyone that gets tattooed underage ends up regretting it, and wanting it gone/tattooed over again in the end.

Think about this too, if a tattoo artist is willing to resort to tattooing someone that is underage, then how could you trust that they are not ignoring other guidelines that reputable tattoo artists stick to, like keeping everything sterile so that their customers won't pick up some blood borne infections/diseases? Do you care so little about your body and health that you would be willing to take that risk rather than waiting just over a year? You could use that year refining the idea of what you want, print off the design and stick it on your wall so you're looking at it every day. Looking up artists so that you can find who has a style that you like, and as you will be 18, you can go to any of them that you like then!

I got tattooed when I was 16 at Golden Cat.

While I don't regret it, because it was important to me at the time and will always be a nice reminder of my youth as I get older, I wouldn't get the same tattoo now and I'm only 19.

Wait 'til you're 18 and heed what Damo is telling you. You're only just over a year off being 18, it'll be worth it.

I allowed my 16 (nearly 17) yr old daughter to get one as it was something very special, the only condition was that she had it where it can be properly covered up. I filled out the appropriate consent form and the artist did a fantastic job ( at a professional studio ).

As most other people have said, wait until your 18, you can go to any artist you want then.
Could be a little presie to yourself for you 18th birthday :p

Sorry but i'm going to have to seriously disagree with this advice, get what you want OP regardless of what anyone else says about size, placement etc.

Granted you may end up regretting a piece in 10 years time but would ya prefer to get exactly what you want now or compromise and regret it as soon you walk out the door of the studio

I definitly agree with you on the regret thing, I don't think would regret getting it cos' it's still an experience and yeah I might regret the design (which I won't cos' it's sentimental) but I'd never know if I never got it! :)

As someone who began her inkings at 18, I truly wish I had waited until at least my mid-twenties.At the time nobody could have convinced me otherwise, however I would advise and even plead with you to wait at least another 4 years before committing to any design.

i can completely agree with this one. i refuse to get the one i got at 18 covered up (apart from the fact i think it'd be rather difficult) as it is part of me, it is a decision i made and i now have to live with it. but i wish i had waited and thought it through a little bit more, and i may not have gotten it.

Well, you kinda would know if you didn't get it, if you go on a few years you'd either say, "OK it's been a few years and I still want this, I'm not sick of it!" or "Jesus look at that, I'm glad I didn't get that in the end!"

But then I can't talk, I'm 19 and have 3, soon to be 4 tattoos. But I've accepted that there's the possibility of regretting them, it's something I can live with :P

I'm 19 and have 6 tattoos. Do I regret them now? Not at all! Each one has it's own little story to it and I love them. Will I regret them later on? Who knows. I think I won't regret them and will probably just look at them and smile knowing why I got them done. I was allowed to get a tattoo at 16 but so glad I didn't as I would have definitely regretted what I wanted only 3 years ago. People change and opinions change especially in your teens so just hold off that extra year and be sure of what you want.

I'm in the same boat as you :o I'm okay with it, for the moment. But then again not many people see mine. I've been really reluctant to start my arms etc.

If I had gotten my wrist or something done at this stage I'd be going mad.

One of the major things that i'm careful about actually is running out of space for when i'm a bit older? Yes, Genuine concern is real estate already :P

hehe. my first one was on my wrist! but it was small enough that it wasn't overly noticed. second one was a nice big cross on my leg! actually now there are three little ones on my wrists, a little on on the back of my neck, but my left foot and up my leg has a large one, and there are two huge ones on my right leg. you do wonder if at times they will be a bit in-appropriate (espcially the skull one - was meant to be going back to disney this year (not going til next now but that is another story) and they say they may ask you to cover tats they consider in-appropriate. mine is a skull but instead of crossbones they are two big chef knives?!?

Hey Im 27 and have 6 tattoo's, just got number 6 done last weekend :D I got my first tattoo done for my 18 birthday, now while I dont hate it or necessarily regret it because it was who I was back then I know that it is something I would never ever et done today I have changed so much in last few yrs!! My advise would definitely be to wait a few yrs!! Tattoo's are permanent, your stuck with it forever haha What I've always done with mine is if I found a design I really liked and wanted to get done id hide it nd a few months later might come across it again if I still liked it then id think serious about getting it done :) hope it helps

I got my first soon after my 17th birthday! :)
With parental consent, you should be fine. Usually you'll need it in writing, because the artist doesn't want to get in trouble.
I didn't even need it in writing, because my dad went to book the appointment with me + the guy that we went to tattooed my dad and brother before, so he trusted me :)

To be honest, I'd seriously recommend waiting until you're a little bit older if it's just a little whim of yours, because you may soon become bored with it!
I know I sound like a bit of a hypocrite by saying it, but there's a difference between a decision that was well thought over and a whim. If you're sure that your tattoo is meaningful and you won't hate it after 5, 10, or 20 years, get it. If you're in doubt, WAIT.

Tbh I think the legal age should be 21 (although it wouldn't be practical in reality).. ALOT of people in later years would change or cover up the tattoos they got under that age.

Just thinking about some of the tattoo's I would have killed for when I was 16-17...and I have to say if I had them now, I'd be mortified! You do an awful lot of growing up between 16 and 18, what you love now, you might not be too fond of a few months down the line. It's always better to wait till you're that little bit older. Give yourself the year to play around with the design, if you still want it when you turn 18, then by all means.

Main reason tattoo artists wont tattoo you till your 18 is because they'd rather you have finished growing. If its a detailed tattoo if you grow some more it wont look too good.
    Your 16, when i was 16 i was i was about 5'9, when i was 18 i was 6'1" and i stopped growing at about 21 and i'm now 6'8".
The tattoo i got on my left arm at 17 had to eventually be covered up because it wasnt looking great after stretching a bit :D
