I am currently in 1st year of the accounting technician qualification and I hope to go straight into the 3rd year of the Accounting and Finance Degree in the local IT my question is when applying for internships etc. what would my grade be e.g. 2.1 if I didnt do 1st and 2nd year of the degree or would it just be not applicable and a downside of transferring.
Hope Im making sense and would appreciate any help with this

    Hi Mad_Shopaholic,

First thing I would say is that going into 3rd year of accounting degree is a big step up from ATI diploma so just be aware of the extra commitment you will be making.

I am in my 4th year and took the same route you are considering if you are good at accounting then 3rd year should be ok and easily managed.

When you apply for intern programs you would need to mention that you did ATI and specify your overall results and the gpa you received in 3rd year in college. If you got a 2.1 for year 3 then that's what you got and what you put in your application.

Year 1 and 2 in college are pass or fail grades in year 3 its distinction, pass or fail and in 4th then its 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, pass or fail.

You will need to work really hard to achieve a 2.1 minimum in year 3 to remain in the competition for internships as well.

Personally I think you are making a good choice by doing the ATI first then enrolling in 3rd year at college

i did accounting technician also, and went and got my honours degree after completing 3rd and 4th year. to be honest i found 3rd and 4th year easier, as our lecturers were much better than the ATI ones, plus unlike ATI the lecturers set the exams at 3rd level. what i did find harder were the extra committments to assignments in 3rd level.

No shopping lately I'm afraid! thanks for your experiences and explaining it to me just another question my leaving cert wouldn't be the best will this completely exclude me from the intern positions?

Well going from the advice given in my college and others on the boards here I would say if you explain why you didn't do well and can sell your skills to date then it shouldn't be a problem.

I would apply regardless the worst they can do is say no

    Best of luck
