Hi, looking around for a Mondeo at the moment. The question I have is there is a good few around with the engine gone/smokey etc. so Im wondering are them engines not great or it depends the way a car was treated?

    And any opinions on diesels?

The 1.8 petrol engine in the early Mk3 Mondeos was not great. The diesels are much better.

It will be hard to find a 10 year old mondeo that isnt tired, seeing any many clocked 100k miles in the first 3/4 years.

By now they are on the 3rd or 4th owner and maintenance is probably a non event for many.

That said I got a 96 one a few years ago in absolutely immaculate condition with 45k genuine miles, and it didn't command much of a premium over a tired car.

They key I think is to take your time, and try the small ads rather than donedeal.

early mondeo engines 01-03 had an issue where a butterfly valve around the intake had/has a habit of breaking down. The plastic would breakup and fall into the engine, the supporting pin/bar could also fall in, thus the reason early cars are cheap. 1.8 engines are very hard to get secong hand as a result.

This issue was resolved in 2003 so the later engines should be ok.

Having said that all engines have a thirst for engine oil, and should be regularly checked.

I only know this from researching before buying mine, so i am open to correction if any1 knows better.
