Degu Help

Very worried about my female 2-year old Degu. Her female buddy died 3 weeks ago so I've been paying her close attention, giving her lots of affection while I can find a new male for her to hopefully start breeding a family of these wonderful animals. Let her out to run around my apartment while I was at work & just picked her up & I've noticed she's making a sinusy sound (best described as a squelsh) & the whites of one of her eyes has become swollen & bloodshot. Can't find an exact description for this anywhere & I seem to know more about them than my vet who thinks she's a hamster, according to what she's 'advised' in the past.

    Any help massively appreciated.

You should definitely take her to another vet, with small animals sinus problems can be very dangerous

Can anyone recommend a vet for Degu in the Drogheda area?

I can vouch for Allpets, Ann Marie is our vet and is brilliant.

Call Bairbre O'Malley in Bray 01 2723857. Shes the only exotic pet specialist in Ireland & will help you with your degu. Probably suffering separation anxiety (which is detrimental), consequently displaying psychosomatic symptoms due to stress.

Also, there's no market in this country for degus, they're very difficult to home, aside from the fact that, on your part, breeding for breeding sake in order to appreciate the 'wonderful animals' is a contradiction and unjustifiable. welfare for the animal comes first.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Regards breeding: I wouldn't be looking to sell them. Just seeing her alone is gutting & like the thought of her having a full life by gradually introducing a mate & letting her breed a wee family. After the first batch is born I'd get the male neutered.

Definetly go to anothe vet that knows what they are doing asap small animals go downhill very fast and the Degu will need treatment straight away.

If you do go down the breeding route eventually don't do it unless you have a new experienced vet to hand, last thing you need is more becoming ill..all sorts of complictions can happen with any pet giving birth etc. and not having a decent vet to treat them. Ensure you choose a vet that has 24/7 service for emergencies.

They're cute little fellas but they aren't all that popular can't understand why.
Hope you get your Degu sorted and she improves.

Eye healed up completely by the next day & she seems to have gotten over her cold whcih was a massive relief as she was rarely coming out of her cage when the eye flared up. Back mad running around the wheel, hyper when she's out of the cage & lets me give her a tickle again. Almost back to her old self, but doesn't seem ársed with a sand bath strangely enough. Maybe because she no longer has her buddy to impress?

    Broccolli time!
