Have a broken laptop here that turns on but freezes once the desktop has loaded.

I have lots of music and pictures, programs etc. I need off that laptop and need to transfer it to an external harddrive or to a new laptop. Is it possible to access the harddrive from the dead laptop from a new one using any sort of cables etc?

    Thanks

Do you have a desktop computer?

If so you could pop out the laptop hard drive and stick it into the desktop without having to get any special connections or cables.

Never thought of that. My desktop is as old as hugh heffner though and it could make a relatively simple operation a week long process. I'm using it now and it takes 25 minutes to start up once turned on.

    Any other options, using cables?

    Thanks

You might investigate booting it from a USB stick with YUMI and Ubuntu to copy what you want to keep to an external drive/stick.

There are obviously cheaper versions, but iv read that usb 2.0 speeds are terrible when using these. Thats exactly why u should buy this as its speeds are great with usb 3.0 (ps, u must have a usb 3.0 port on your motherboard to get the high speeds)

    Hope this helped :)

Just use the cables in the desktop. Seriously, you'd have it setup without having to spend any money.

Provided your desktop has SATA connectors you're sorted. Otherwise you're going to have to spend cash, and wait to have it.

    This post would help.

Maybe it's just a banjaxed Windows installation rather than a hardware failure.

Use a Linux Live distro and backup your files onto an external hard drive. Then install the operating system again.
