I doubt unplugging the MAF will help you but it is right in front of you when you lift the bonnet. Look for the intake pipe running from the airbox and you will see it.

Can't seem to get it to release. Someone said the next time it does it bad to unplug it. Although I think I'm clutching at straws

Online guides state to simply unlug the harness John, apologies that's all I can dig up.
Some mention unclipping the a clip using your thumbnail or a screwdriver.......... Unclip the harness connected to the middle of the MAF: The clip can be removed using your thumbnail. If it won't pop up, try a small screw driver. Be gentle so you don't break the clip. Once you hear the clip pop, wiggle the harness off of the MAF. (All of the harnesses use the same type of clip so once you learn how to release one, you can use that technique for coils or any other harness that need to be taken off for repair)

As GeorgeD said, 'tis up by the airbox...

What do you mean by "knocking"? On some generations of TDI the MAF is only there for controlling EGR flow, so its impact on the running of the car is limited enough. If the engine is running very roughly, check that the timing belt is in good shape, and that it's getting enough fuel.
