lackabane golf course has been sold to the Liebbher group.
heard a rumour last night but a journalist friend of mine just confirmed it.
6million is what i hear it was sold for and it is going to be leased back to Killarney GC.

Killarney GC are lucky to have neighbour like Liebbher

What's the rationale for this? I see the benefit to Killarney GC, but what's the attraction for Liebherr?

expansion, plenty of land? Use it for employees members club perhaps?

    As bailey said,expansion.
they had already bought a piece of the course(along by the 11th fairway)for expansion purposes. Liebbher are also big hoteliers in Killarney (hotel europe, dunloe castle, ard na sidhe)it would be an ideal location for a hotel complete with ready made golf course.
its a good move for both parties,6million seems like a steal

I'm actually quite surprised that someone would splash out €6m for this. So if Liebherr want it for expansion then seems like a lot for a piece of land to expand the crane factory.

On the flip side if they want if for a hotel so that it can have a golf course on site, the hotel will have a pretty big eyesore view of the existing ginormous crane factory that's on-site already.

Sounds like happy days for the KGFC owners who just rid themselves of a very mediocre course in comparison to the other two across the road.

Killarney GC will be delighted with this move. They can invest money into Mahonys and Killeen.

Killeen is in desperate condition at the moment.

Lackabane no more unfortunately , closed for good end of next month .
Ye might laugh at this but don't be surprised to see the National Ploughing Championships making is way to Killarney in the near future .
One way to dig up and clear the Course I suppose .

I was practicing at the Lackabane academy last Wednesday and there were people playing on the course and the greens looked pretty good to be honest.

I see you can join Killarney now for €2,000. Not bad for 3 courses!

I played it yesterday, first time. It's still a bit rough around the edges which is as you'd expect from a course recently reopened. It was €25 for round and lunch in main clubhouse so really good value.

I really like the design, it's not as beautiful as the other two but very enjoyable to play.

Given the choice I think I'd prefer it to Mahonys Point but don't expect it to be pristine etc.

    Place was almost deserted btw.

They are starting Open singles every Saturday beginning tomorrow I think. €25 incl grub as well. What is the Par of the course now after the changes? Always thought is was a good track.

I think we played the old set up. For a while the two holes at the front were to be played again off different tees as 17&18 but the old ones were open so we just played them. 18 is a nice / tough finishing hole.

Playing. partner had played it before and he thought there were no changes.

I know there were some changes since I played there because there was a par 5 around a lake which was bought by leibherr (sp?) so was just interested to know what way the got around that. Must try to get back there in the next few weeks to check it out

Ahh that might be the 11th gone from 5 to 4? There was a bit if a walk for the 10th green to tee box which seemed odd and it was near factory.

    How were the greens?

There were plenty of bare patches but they ran true enough.

They're poor compared to the other courses but for greens that have been left unattended for a couple fo years until a couple of weeks ago they're very good.

Was the course maintained at all over the last few years ?

Ah um yes it was, but to a minimun basic standard, i.e. the outline of all the holes/fairways were cut albeit to a higher height and and less frequently than normal, same with the greens.

Oh really? that explains the quick recovery then.

Anytime I used the practice area (not all that often) the fairways were overgrown and the second green looked untouched.

Yes I agree it definetly looked shabby, but the basic outline was always there, I used to walk over to the 2nd green to have a look anytime I was using the range and it was clearly been cut but less frequently and a higher height.
