Cork City Firebirds take on Glasgow Roller Girls in the first game of the season on Sunday March 4th at 2pm at the Little Island Sports Complex. Tickets are 5 euro on the door, and under 5's go free, so bring the kids along as well as your friends to support your local badass sports league!

CORK CITY FIREBIRDS was founded in June 2011, and played its first bout against Dublin Roller Girls a month later. They learned from that loss, and duly did the home crowd proud, burning track to their first win against Amsterdam’s Derby Dames last November.
GLASGOW ROLLER GIRLS, described by founder Teri Toxic as “a dedicated hardworking bunch of gals, kicking this sport into the recognition it deserves” were founded in Feb 2007. They were the 4th roller derby team established in the UK and the 1st in Scotland. The Firebirds will be taking on their B Team, the Maiden Grrdrs.

Flat-track roller derby is a fast, fun, full-contact team sport, played on traditional quad roller skates. Two teams of five skate on a flat oval track. One skater on each team is the point-scorer – known as the Jammer, wearing the star on her helmet. The Jammer scores a point every time she legally passes a member of the opposing team - but getting through the pack isn't that easy! The jammer will be helped by her own team, but will be blocked, checked, and hit by the opposition as she attempts to rack up those points. Skaters play by an extensive, detailed rule set provided by the Women’s Flat-Track Derby Association, and no fewer than seven referees are on hand to make sure this full-contact sport is just as regulated as any game of rugby or hurling. Each 30-minute half is broken down into 'jams', lasting up to two minutes, which means the game keeps rolling at a break-neck speed!

The afterparty will be held at the Vicarstown Bar, North Main St., from 4pm
