Am interested in becoming an addiction counsellor and am wondering which course is the best one to undertake.

What courses have you looked at? Though I hate that term addiction counsellor. The HSE dropped the term years ago, I just wish other programmmes would follow suit.

    What is it called now?
And why do you hate it?

People are just counsellors or therapists. The term addiction counsellor is misleading as it implies that a therapist is only addressing the addiction or drug use/behaviour.

We see people who may have addiction problems, but there may be many more things than need to be addressed as well as the addiction. The clinical issues addressed with the confines of a drug treatment centre are vast and certainly go way beyond mere drug use or compulsive/obsessive behaviour. Does that make sense?

Yeah I guess that makes sense. So do you think that there is no extra training or different skills required to work with addiction?

Of course extra training is needed, but in all areas. I may work with sex offenders who have an addiction. Woeking in the addiction open you up to working with so much more than drug use or "addictive behaviours". Does than answer your question?

@Pookie1234,you have been busy. DBS would be my number one suggestion, you could follow it on with the MA in Addiction Studies there.

Many thanks for your reply. Currently just finishing year 3 of an arts degree (psychology + sociology) but am thinking of finishing in May and opting to transferring credits over to Open University so I can complete the degree in psychology and then continue with DBS and do the MA in Addiction studies.

Sounds like a good plan; all you will need to do is get some clinical training/work to go along side with the academic learning. Best of luck with it.
