Hi just looking for advise for my brother, he has been a self employed courier for the past 4yrs, he never made a profit of more than 10,000 per annum after expenses etc. So I think he has paid little tax. He is now out of work completely. He is married and his wife is working full time. Earning approx 35,000 per annum they have a mortgage of 1400 per month plus car loan and no kids. I am guessing he wont be entitled to any dole but where does he go from here? Should he de register as self employed? can his wife claim his PAYE tax credits? would they be entitled to any intrest supllement? Prior to his self employed stint he was a PAYE worker for 17yrs.

    Thanks for reading this far!

He can apply for JSA he will need to apply to his nearest welfare office. He might not get much but it may help.

From a taxes point of view, if he is no longer self employed, he should deregister. It's form trcn1 he fills out. As he has no taxable income, he needs to make sure he's down as joint assessed with his wife, so she can take some of his rate band and his personal tax credit. The paye credit is non transferable.

Does he need to sign on to ensure his PRSI contributions are kept up? He wont qualify for JSA
