kernel panic on new iMac

I got a new iMac in work about 3 weeks ago. Since then I've had about 3-4 kernel panics with it. I've just run the complete hardware test and nothing showed up. I'm going to boot into safe mode and repair permissions, after that swap the RAM with another mac. Is there anything else I should try?

The cause of panics are usually logged. You could check if the same thing is causing the panic each time, like some hardware device or perhaps something that uses kernel extensions or drivers.

Try running Memtest86, although keep in mind these programs don't always identify memory issues. On my desktop, Memtest passed after running for days and days, but RMAing the RAM sorted my problem.

Failing all of that, just call Apple and try to get the machine replaced. It's only 3 weeks old.

It took me a day getting all the needed software running on it do I'd prefer not to send it back. I was going to try and replace the memory to test it yesterday. I found the little black plastic tabs impossible to pull out. Anyone had this trouble?

Obviously sending it back isn't ideal. Did you check in the Console app for panic logs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,789 ✭✭✭grizzly

The last time it shut down it asked to send a report to Apple. I saved the info into a text file. Will post it up next time I'm on the machine.

Is there 3rd party RAM installed?
Is it hooked up to any third-party accessories? Anything other than the keyboard and mouse?
Is there any AV/security software installed? Or anything else that runs in the background?

No to all of those, except we bought through typetec. So they could have put 3rd party RAM. I'll have to check.

I tried switching the RAM with another iMac to check it. I got stuck trying to pull the black plastic tabs. Anyone find these very hard to remove? I didn't want to fires too hard - was using a tiny plyers in the end before giving up.

I'm not sure if you can run it on a Mac but Memtest86+ is very good at diagnosing faulty RAM, download it to a CD and boot off it to run it, if it passes after 2 or 3 loops your RAM is likely to be fine

I saw Memtest on another forum (Apple support I think). Will give it a go. Thanks.

It's got something to do with the Airport driver. Turning off Airport will stop it from happening. Have you any software installed that could be interfering with networking?

Is your software up-to-date? Apple released a WiFi patch for iMacs a few days ago.

Yep that is def the Airport causing the panics, looks like you have 10.7.3 but not the latest Wifi firmware, although I think latest firmware was for connection dropping but you never know.

If you don't use wifi I would just turn it off

Thanks SP, yes I had it running off just WiFi. I've turned it off at the admin level and am using ethernet now. Downloaded the WiFi update, it's looks like it deals only with waking from sleep issues, but... who knows?

Fingers crossed this will sort it!
