So got home yesterday and there was a note from UPC saying they've now done my area for fibre optic broadband.
I currently have 8MB NGB with eircom. It's ok not great but at least it's consistent and never had major problems with them. Generally stuck on a 3bar but that's manageable.
Always think that either eircom or UPC are good until something goes wrong and then y'er pretty fukd.
I see posts about UPC being down a lot and complaints about lag and am kinda reluctant to change. Also as more people on my estate get it will the lag get worse due to contention (I'm really really dumb when it comes to tech stuff so if I'm using words out of context go easy)
Any views about if I should change or just leave it R much appreciated.

oh and don't want this moved to broadband forums or anything cos all I care about is COD :)

I have UPC, have no personal experience of Eircom NGB.

I'm on the 30MB package with UPC, I pull host more often than not and guaranteed 4 bars, have had very few service issues with them, maybe one phone call per year in relation to broadband service. I don't experience any major contention or performance degradation. The support is fine also.

Most of the guys who I play with have UPC, similar experiences. Other Eircom guys we play with, typically have 3 bar and generally performance not as good.

I've had eircom and I would say upc are better from experience. Eircom was down for me for 3 months when we had that cold weather a year or so ago and it took countless phonecalls over month and a half to them to get them to send someone out turned out the line was damaged and they had to order a special part or some bs. They fixed the line anyway and still no broadband for another month and they sent someone back out only to tell that the modem was broke. Tech dude said I'd have to ring them back up and get new modem (Biting fist  at this stage) so rang anyways and was told it would be 50 quid for new modem. Said 'good luck tya boss...'

UPC in game at the moment lots of lag comp for me most times but no qualms with them.

Eircom's "Next-Gen" is in fact probably 4 generations ago for UPC. And you probably pay far more for Eircom that you would for UPC.

Also, if you just happen to use torrents for obviously Legit reasons because noone here would think of using torrents to infringe copyrights, Eircom will shop you to IMRO, UPC specifically fight to let you do as you please.

What's the story with you contract with eircom?
    When does it end?
I moved from eircom to upc recently.....delighted I did.
Eircom make it very very hard for you to leave. Horrid bunch of ***** to deal with. Only for this website I don't think I would have been able to leave.
Go to the eircom forum on this site and pm Mark (think that's his name)
He will sort it for you.

UPC is great if they actually cover your area,

Have been waiting for them to get their act together in Cork for a few years now. Still no closer. Its gonna have to be Eircom and their rip off prices for me
    :(

    and Eircoms shoddy broadband product

I moved from Eircom 7MB (but 5MB more realistically) to UPC 100MB a couple of months ago. I never had many problems with Eircom when playing COD but with UPC I get regular modem resets for no obvious reasons (to me at least). I get the full 4 bars unless playing in an American lobby or something. Lag is generally never an issue but as I said I'd get knocked offline once a day if I clocked up six hours of gameplay a day.
It can be tolerable most of the time because it only takes a minute to get back online but it's infuriating if you're in the middle of a S&D with your mates. Or, actually, a more specific which happened yesterday: six of us were playing sabotage and with 2 minutes remaining (out of 20), my modem reset. Since I was host, the whole game dropped and when you disconnect in the middle of a game none of your stats/achievements from that game are accounted for (which is different to when you leave a game voluntarily).

^ I'd probably be ok with that. If it was dropping every hour or so that would be a different story (although that sabotage story is painnful :) ) . I'll get UPC in the next few weeks or so - thanks for the responses.

Update your router and change the lease on the connection to 99999999 or something like that.

About that, have you changed channels by logging onto the router? If you're using the cisco epc router I used to have my modem reset often until I changed my channel, a few neighbours were on the same channel and that messed things up for me. Also if you go into, Basic Settings - IP Management and increase lease time to 50000 or something like that it should stop resetting hourly, that's what my router used to do anyway...
