If someone is studying full time and working weekends to support themselves can they claim illness benefit while they are off sick from work. Mature student with 12 years PRSI contributions paid.

You would be entitled to claim based on your stamp history, but I wonder how the dept would view the fact that you are able to travel to and from classes, study ect.
I think you need to call in to your local office and ask, bring in doc's letter ect.

Thanks for that reply mp22. That's the thing the student has a broken foot and will not be able to work or go to Uni for a good while.
The reason I ask is that in the Operational Guidelines on Welfare.ie it states that if someone is on sickness benefit and wishes to study they have to get permission to do so...just wondered did the same apply for someone already in college not getting any government assistance or was the PRSI stamps paid over 12 years enough to qualify them for illness benefit.

I think that the study referred to in the guidelines would include going to college (traveling ect)sitting at home reading while broken bones mend would be ok (imo).
