Was just wondering, are student numbers meant to be private, i.e your name and number should never be together in a email or similar?

In general, yes. They can be a bit lax about it sometimes, though.

I don't know much regarding the privacy of student numbers in certain situations, but come exam time, most (maybe not all, I can't say I know) exam venues have a list of names next to student numbers (all grouped in the same course) outside to indicate students seat number for that venue. So, for then at least, most student numbers are temporarily exposed.

No, they're not private at all. Certain college bodies (e.g. the accommodation office) require you to quote your student number in all correspondence with them.

I knew you needed them when corresponding to some college departments. I was certain I read a rule that they can't be displayed alongside you name thought. -Obviously, I'm imagining things!

You may have seen that rule mentioned about your examination number. This is also on your student card, under your picture.

Yeah, this is probably it. Your exam number is for anonymous marking (like in the state exams), so you shouldn't have your name visible beside that. Even though you have to write your name in the bottom corner of the exam booklets anyway and fold it up...
