Performance review?

I haven't had to do a performance review for some years but my current employer has introduced it this year. The last time I had to do one a pay rise followed, but this one is 'for personal development' rather than for some sort of monetary gain.
Is that standard practice these days?

It was in 2006, for me.

    Fairly standard.....

    ....fairly painful and pointless too

Not if it's done properly. I'd say there's something wrong if performance isn't reviewed regularly.

I have to agree with PK, really don't see the point.

It's pretty self-explanatory. It's so your employer can review your performance, so you know what's expected of you, let you know where you need to improve if required, that there are no surprises if you're not performing and so on.

Standard in our firm where we do it twice yearly. It's a bit of a pain in the backside preparing for it, but I do find it beneficial. Plus, it's an established track record, on which compensation & bonuses can be based.
