Asking about wages after job offer

    Hi,
It's been 9 years since I've had to do the dreaded wage negotiation after being offered a job.
It's not a high end job of any sort, not one that you'd be getting with letters after your name, but a responsible job nonetheless and I take a lot of experience into it with me.

I would work for €9/hr, ideally €10...who know's, I might only be offered €8:o, but i'd like to have an idea of what to ask for.

My question is, how do I calculate a gross amount so I can ask for enough to get €10/h net. I understand I may only be given an amount and told take it or leave it, but when being interviewed he did mention we'd 'Trash out a wage'

I'm married, no kids, husband self employed. It'll be a 25-30hours a week job, I didn't earn enough in my last job to pay much tax.

    Any advice grateful.

your ideal scenario is about 300 Euros a week net. I would tell him that " I would ideally like to be getting around 300 quid a week after tax to pay bills etc etc. Is this a figure which you could work with? Dont sell yourself short if you feel that its a fair amount

Thanks, I just looked up an old payslip and 11yoyos an hour would get me about 10net. It's less than my last job but I'd have less travel expenses, and free parking.

I would imagine based on the few details you have given that the job is worth more then 10 an hour net. I think you need to find out the going rate for the job and look for a minimum of that.

Anyway it's impossible to calculate the gross you would need without knowing your tax free allowance. If your husband is taking all your allowance that would mean your employer having to pay you significantly more to achieve a particular net because so much more of your income would be subject to tax.

I know it's not what you asked but this may help. The minimum wage is back to €8.65 per hour now. So you wont shouldn't get offered €8.

Thanks for the reply, he offered my considerably more than I thought, so I guess i'm so out of the loop I didn't even realise I was getting far too little in my last job. Go figure:rolleyes: all's well now though.

Run it through a tax calculator, though.
