Playstation 3

I have a problem with a Playstation 3 console at home. When I switch it on at the back and press the power button in front of where the disc goes in ( green light appears then it beeps twice ) I should get a picture on the TV, but there isn't. Everything is plugged and wired correctly. If you look on the actual console, right beside where you plug in the charger for the controller, there is a wireless signal and a battery signal. It's the battery signal which lights up when I switch it on. Is that the problem? The battery is just gone? And if so, how do I go about repairing it or is knackered? Only about 3 years old. Thanks in advance.

The PS3 is connected to an electricity supply. It has no battery

Could be your tv connection. Have you just gone to a HD, or back from a HD? Try holding down the power button and reset the settings for whatever type of tv you own

Oh, and just so you know, the "battery" icon is the processor. Your PC has the same thing

Well do you know where you plug in the connection on the console if you want to charge your controller? Beside that there is two signals. One looks like a wireless signal, and the other is a battery signal. It's the battery signal that lights up.

And it's not the tv. I've tried it on three different televisions. Could it be one of the leads that go from the tv to the console? Or from the plug to the console?

Just edited my post. That is the processor LED. Like I said, your PC has the exact same thing

One is a light for the wireless and the other is a light for the processor. If the orange light is flashing the processor is working.

Turn off the playstation with the button at the front, then hold down the button for a few seconds till the PS3 beeps three times. Should reset the HDMI port.

That was recommended to me but it still didn't work. When you switch the console on, the tv screen adjusts as if it's about to come out, but it's just remains a blank screen. The three connections ( yellow, red, white ) that you plug from the cosole to the tv are all in correctly too.

Have you got another composite cable or a HDMI lead?

What's that? Is it the connection with the red, white and yellow leads that go from the console to the tv? Yeah I have one of those, from the Wi. I tried it but the connection that goes into the back of the PS3 console is too big.

That LED shows hard disk access, not processor use.

If you have a HDTV you should buy a HDMI lead and use that instead. Much better graphics. If you don't have a HDTV, you might have to buy a new lead. The one from the WII won't work as they're completely different.

You learn something new every day :) I gather it would be the same for the blinky LED on the PC then

I fixed the initial problem. The hardware was completely knackered. From not switching it off properly apparently.

Anyway, in the process of replacing the hardware, it deleted all the data, including my internet account. ( Sorry I'm no good with the correct terms, it's where I sign into to play online ) It's basically like I've got a new PS3

I've tried setting up a new account by clicking the Playstation button on the controller, then into 'Playstation Network' then 'Sign up'. A message then appears on the screen a couple of seconds later saying '' A connection to the network could not be established. Go to {Settings} > {Network Settings} and check your settings. ''

I've then gone to ''Network Settings'' and into ''Internet Connection Settings''. A message then appears saying ''Adjust settings for connection to the Internet. If making a wired connection, you must hav an Ethernet cable connected. '' So I click ''Ok'' ( it's the only option to proceed ).

Then it says ''Select a setting method'' I select ''Easy''. Then it says ''Select a connection method''. I select ''Wireless''. Then it proceeds to ''WLAN Settings'' where I have the options of ''Scan'', ''Enter Manually'' or ''Automatic''. I click ''Scan''. A list of access points appear and I click the one I use for my general internet at home on my PC.

I'm then asked for the ''WLAN Security Setting''. I choose ''WEP''. I then have to enter the ''WEP Key'' which I presumed is the same password for my internet connection on my PC. I enter it and proceed. It checks the network configuration for a few moments.

A message then appears saying ''The attempt to obtain the IP address timed out. The WEP key you entered may not be correct.''

Any idea how to fix this so I can set up an online account? The WEP Key I entered has to be correct but it works on my PC.

Text entry on the PS3 can be very finicky. Make sure it is not adding in an extra space to your password.

Also, when you select your wireless router [the one you connect to on your PC], there is a column next to it that states the security type it uses. Is that WEP? Or WPA-somethingorother?

Equally then if I go back to the start where it says ''Select a setting method'' - instead of choosing ''Easy'' I choose ''Custom''. ''Select a connection method'' I choose ''Wireless''. ''WLAN Settings'' I choose ''Scan''. My access point appeared with the ''SSID'' listed and the ''Security'' listed as ''WEP''. So I click that and proceed to ''WLAN Security Setting''. I have 3 options here: ''None'', ''WEP'' or ''WPA-PSK / WPA2-PSK''. I choose ''WEP''. I then enter my ''WEP Key'' and proceed. Then ''IP Address Setting'' appears. I choose ''Automatic''.

It then says ''Set the DHCP host name. In most cases this setting does not need to be changed.'' I choose ''Do Not Set''. Then ''DNS Setting'' appears and I choose ''Automatic''. Then ''MTU'' setting appears and I choose ''Automatic''. Then ''Proxy Server'' appears and I choose ''Do Not Use''. Then ''UPnP'' appears and I choose ''Enable''.

This appears to be the end then and it says ''Press the x button to save settings'' and lists the choices I made. I click the x button. It then says '' Save completed'' and gives me the optoon to ''Test Connection''. I choose to test the connection.

It then says at the top. ''Connecting to access point'' and then ''Obtaining IP address..'' with my ''SSID'' underneath it.

After a few moments it says ''Connection test completed. Obtain IP Address: Failed. Internet Connection: - ''

Running along the bottom of the screen it says: ''The attempt to obtain the IP Address timed out. The WEP Key you entered may not be correct.''

I think the main problem is they can't establish an Internet Connection. I find that odd though because my PC can establish an Internet Connection without any difficulty. How can the Internet work for the PC but not for the PS3?

Are you absolutely certain that the security for your internet is WEP and not either of the other two options?

Well when the ''WLAN Settings'' appear and I choose ''Scan'' my access point appears and under ''Security'' it says ''WEP''?

I tried the other two options and they both failed the ''test connection'' at the end.

Are you connecting wirelessly or via ethernet cable? If its wireless, you could be too far away from the router to make a proper connection.

I'm connecting via Wireless. The router is actually on top of the TV! The rooter, the TV and the PS3 are all in about 2 yards of eachother! While my PC is located upstairs and still connects the Internet no problem.

No idea what your problem could be... does it connect via ethernet cable at all?
