Lads I got offered a 01 diesel passat from a family member that's leaving the country soon. He's told me that it needs some work to get it through the nct and it'll cost around 1000e. I get the feeling he's guesstimating and doesnt really know though! Could some helpful person have a quick look over what needs doing and tell me if its worth my while taking it?

The instrument cluster clocks needs replacing
The fuel filter housing needs replacing
The brake server might be on the way out
Theres a mesh exhaust thing by the engine block needs replacing (can't remember the name of it)
Theres oil leaking from the intercooler pipe so I take it that needs to be replaced too

I'm getting this car free so the only thing I'd have to pay for is fixing it. So would it be worth my time taking this?

are you able to do any of the work yourself or will you be sending it to a garage??

    Sounds worth it to me.

If you actually need such a car.

You could do it yourself, then it would only cost you for the parts.

Thanks for the reply lads. So does 1000e sound about right?
I'd end up breaking more than what I'd fixd if I tried and the fact I barely know how to change the oil lol so it'll be a garage doing all the work, I'd be the one getting the parts though if that means anything.

With the right diagnostic tools, you can make do with a secondhand cluster - it's possible to adjust the mileage to match what's on the car. Fitting it is a bit of a faff, but probably less than 2 hours.

Flex pipe on the exhaust could be an expensive part - I can't remember if it's integral with the catalytic converter or not. An exhaust centre should be able to advise you on this. This one might be expensive on parts.

Not sure about the fuel filter housing. Might just be seals, might be a crack in the housing.

The oil leak from the intercooler pipe may be a split pipe. Those rubber hoses are expensive enough, and only available from the main dealers. Chances of getting one in a scrapyard are slim since most of the morons that work in them will cut the hoses rather than take the 30 seconds to undo the clamps.

Surely a generic flexi section can be bought and welded in. Many different sizes available.

I think if this car is reasonably tidy in general, it is a bargain.

I wouldn't be so sure it's actually leaking oil from the inter cooler. Every vw I've seen leaks some oil from there but it's usually insignificant!

Check if the level is dropping

The car is costing you nothing so even if it costs more than you are willing or can afford to pay to have it fixed you have lost nothing. And if you do decide not to fix it, you might get a few hundred for it selling it as it is.

My advice would be to snap your relative's hand off and take it, get a price from a few garages to fix it. Then decide if you want to spend money on it.
