When should Shocks be changed on a '08 Mondeo

Not sure if this is in the right thread:

Does anyone know what the average mileage on a 08 Mondeo should be before the shocks need to be replaced?

Was getting a knocking noise in the back of the car and brought it to the local ford garage who I bought the car from within 12 months of buying it off them.

They told be both shocks need to be replaced on the car and would cost at least €450+ but could be more depending on how long it takes to fit them. Told me it could have been pot holes.

bought the car with 80k kms on the clock, have 105k kms on the clock now.

I would say it's too soon for the shocks to be gone. Do you know if the car has a history of carying heavy loads or towing? I'd expect the fronts to go first as that's where most of the weight is.

Garages can look for the simplest solution which can turn out not to be the problem. In the meantime, you're out €450 and still have a knocking noise.

You'd think a ford garage would have a fair idea how long it would take to do back shocks on a Mondeo, if not it's indicative that they do very few if any of them.

105k kms seems way too low. Ask them are they leaking.

I'd get a second opinion, they sound like potential numpties.

I would also say that it's very low mileage for your shocks to be gone. Are they leaking as demonstrated by an oily stain on the shock itself?

I would have thought a more likely reason for the knocking would be ARB bushings. Failing this, it is possible that something has happend the shock top, the mount that holds the shock in place at the top.

Can you replicate the knocking by trying to push down on the car?

I haven't seen these fail yet and I see a lot of them. What i have seen is a couple of links on the rear fail. Shocks don't really tend to produce knocking noise but only leak, an odd time you'd get one knocking.

Rear subframe bushes are a common cause for knocking noises in the older mondeos, I suppose it depends on the mileage of your car and the sort of journeys she does. I would second the rear anti roll bar droplinks for a check.

Im with Azure, these are far more likely the cause of the knocking. Subframe bushes or droplinks rather than the shocks.

The new mondeo is a completely different chassis to the old model so the subframe bush problem is unlikely to have carried over.

Unless something happened to the car(previous crash perhaps) then 105k is very low for even drop links to have failed never mind shocks.

105K around town is a lot different to a nice smooth mway run. If it's a bit bouncy the shocks are gone, if not...
Shocks get noisy if really old and all the oil is gone out of them, which means it probably isn't the cause of your knock.
