Do you retain any benefits if you're on DA & your spouse starts working full time?

I'm on DA (have been since 2006), my wife studies f/t and she graduates this year and because of her degree there's a very good chance she'll be offered a job. Currently my wife is my "qualified adult dependant" on my SW claim. The job would pay fine but I'm wondering can I remain on DA if my wife is working f/t? Remaining on DA isn't my life's ambition btw, so will be looking at courses starting in Sept. Currently at uni but that isn't going very well at all, at all. Do I lose all benefits such as med card, free travel, monthly payment for electricity/phone etc, as well as my DA payment itself? I know we'll lose RA, rent allowance, for sure. Thanks.

It is likely to depend on the full set of circumstances and the amount she is earning.

You might retain a certain level of payment and certain secondary benefits like the medical card will only phase out over time, not immediately.

Her salary would be on min. €30,000 gross for the first year anyway but possibly for the first few years. There would be some job benefits like health insurance, subsidised travel etc but not sure if that'd also cover me, prob not but it might. As far as I know it's quite common in the US for the work backed health plan to cover a spouse to a certain % but not too sure about Ireland.

My own circumstance wouldn't have changed, most likely I'd still be on DA when she would begin working although I could be doing a one or two year course at a college of further ed, maybe on VTOS, maybe not.

    Do you have any kids?

If not, then you may keep a small portion of your Disability Allowance, depending on the exact figures. If you have kids, you'll likely keep a part of your payment.

If you lose your Disability Allowance payment, you will lose anything else that is attached to it, eg. free travel, household benefit and fuel allowance.

If you have been in receipt of Disability Allowance for more than 12 months, you will keep your medical card for 3 years from the date that your income exceeds the income threshold.

As you say, rent supplement will also go, as soon as your wife starts working 30 hours or more. You can continue to receive rent supplement up until the first paycheque your partner gets (up to a maximum of 30 days after she starts work).
