iPhone 4s restoring issue

I just got an iphone 4s from apple. I had the iphone 4 up until now. I synced the new phone and set it up to be the same as the old fone however it hasnt synced any of my recent text or imessages. The last ones are from last November. I have lost all my messages since then. Why did this happen and how can I get around it?

Plug back in your old phone
Right click on it in devices and click backup
Plug back in the new one and restore from backup and select newest backup when it gives you the list of backups
