Hey all, dont post in music much so I apologise if this is in the wrong section.

I'm trying to track down a good compilation/website/youtube channel etc for 30's, 40's and 50's classics. The problem is (as im sure you've already noticed :D) Im not really sure what genre these songs would be under. I already love Bobby Darin so he's a good example (jazz, big band?) but then I'm also looking for stuff like the Andrews Sisters which is a fair bit older and not jazzy...?

The Bioshock soundtrack is a good example of the kind of stuff im after: Bioshock

Anyways, sincere apologies for this completely open ended question but if anyone has any ideas at all I'd really appreciate it.

Bobby Darin was basically a vocal 'crooner', not unlike Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin et all, although Darin came to prominence near the end of the 50's, so was just as influenced by popular music of that time period, which gave him a much poppier sound than the jazzier Sinatra and Dean Martin who came to prominence in the 40's.

The Andrews Sisters were a close harmony vocal group, but like Bobby Darin had a more 'mainstream' sound than a lot of their contemporaries, such as The Boswell Sisters, which also meant that they were more successful commercially.

As for compilations, the Dreamboats and Petticoats album which was released a few years ago is probably a good start for the Bobby Darin sound. It features the likes of Johnnie Ray, Connie Francis, Helen Shapiro and others who were all his competition for chart success at the time. It's a essentially a compilation which chronicles pop music from the late 50's and early 60's, after the initial hysteria surrounding Elvis had died down, but pre-Beatles.

A compilation which I've come across online and is probably better suited to the type of music you're looking for is the 4CD 'Sentimental Journey: Pop Vocal Classics'. This features both The Andrews Sisters and Bobby Darin, along with the likes of Dick Haymes, Billy Eckstine, Mel Torme, The Mills Brothers, Frankie Laine and Lena Horne.

Another compilation is the soundtrack to 'The Singing Detective', a short lived BBC TV series in the 80's, and set in the 1940's. It features some of the same artists as the 'Sentimental Journey' compilation, along with other 30s/40s greats like Al Bowlly, Vera Lynn, Al Jolson, and Bert Ambrose.

These compilations are only the tip of the iceberg, but should get you started.
