Laptop Not Starting - Windows 7 - Please Help

Firstly, hope this is in the right section.

I've got a Samsung RV511 Laptop and today when I was using it as normal, it all just froze, screen went blank, fans and drivers revved up and it all died down. Gave it a few minutes to settle and then tuned it on, seemed to start as normal, but when it got to the Windows Logo and starting windows etc, it flashes to a blue screen with lots of white writing and then aks to Launch Startup Repai or Start Windows Normally.

I've done the repair one a few times now, but it's still not working, same as above happening, and when I do the Start Windows Normally option, it just repeats etc...

I'd love to explain what writing is on the blue screen when it flashes up, but it comes and goes so quikly that I cannot manage to get it.

REALLY need this sorted tonight!!!! Help PLEASE!

Tap F8 when it's booting up. You should get an option to go in to Safe Mode With Networking. Choose that.

When it loads up download this.

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

What that does will check what caused the bluescreen. Post the results here or search google for the resolution.

Okay, I can't even get that far. I have my laptop duel setip. So when t starts I have to select Windows or Ubuntu (Linux) but when I go to the Safe Mode with Networking, I then select Windows and it just restarts my problem... :(

Any other ideas? Appreciate the help... really!!!

Welcome to the Blue Screen of Death. ;)

Can you tell us a few more deatails? Most importantly the Stop Error code, the last two digits (4e in the example below) will suffice.

    7zHPO.jpg

The arrows indicate the important pieces of information.

If that doesn't get us anywhere, you may have to upload a mini dump for examination.

Okay, I'll try but the screen literally pops up for about a split second and then disappears.

Is this fixable within the next few hours???

    Hmm. Get you.

Did you run a repair from the cd or just from the own prompt that you get?

    http://www.mydigitallife.info/download-windows-7-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit-direct-download-links/

^ You can get the iso of your version there (they're not activated hence the availability of download), and boot from it. It'll pick up the windows installation and just select either startup repair or repair from that.

Arrgh, you system is set to automatically restart after a crash.

Try concentrating on the last two digits of the Stop Error code.

    There is no telling.

    Here's a link about it.

    http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html#0x0000009A

Not really a decent link for a resolution though!

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192821

Hmm might be a genuine license issue!?

if you tap f8 and get back to the spot where you see that safe mode option there should be another option below where you can disable the auto restart after a blue screen.
once you have the blue screen stop code we can give you more info

So how can I fix this?? I've no idea what license issues there are though. I installed a fresh legitimate copy of Norton Anti-Virus last week if that is a problem???

    Panicing to the extreme now!

He can't get in to safe mode. It's a dual boot set up.

Does anyone read the other comments? :pac:

No, it refers to the actual license of the operating system and not of any programs installed.

Did you check the links above?

Also could you download one of the iso files and boot from it instead of doing the built-in repair?

Do you have a Windows 7 DVD?

    Or a System Repair Disc?

See my comment earlier with the link to bootable image files of the windows operating system?

    1. Click on link.
    2. Pick a distro (whatever version you're running).
    3. Burn with ImgBurn.
    4. Boot from it.
    5. Try a repair instead of using the built-in one.

Do you have access to another computer with Windows 7?

Then create a System Repair Disc, following these instructions.

Can you not boot in to the linux distro and download it there. Burn it and see?

From what machine are you posting on here?

Right you can either download it on linux and burn it with one of these alternatives.

    http://alternativeto.net/software/imgburn/?platform=linux

Or download it on the vista machine. Download and install ImgBurn. Burn the image to a dvd and boot from that.

Okay, some good news at last. I can access the Ubuntu aka Linux. I'll download the file you linked, and mount it there then now

For a Windows 7 installation disc you'll need a blank DVD (Daemon Tools won't do you any good). For the System Repair Disc, a blank CD will suffice.

Mounting the image in Ubuntu won't help you, you'll need to burn it to a DVD.

    Why mount it?

I'm asking you to burn it to a bootable dvd to get in to repair the windows installation.

As when you reboot the machine it won't recognise it's still mounted (unless it has that feature).

Okay, posting now from the laptop on LInux.

    Which do I download here - http://www.mydigitallife.info/download-windows-7-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit-direct-download-links/ ?

So I need a DVD disc then?? 'coz I don't have one and I need to get into the windows space of the laptop tonight... is there no other way?

Well, there is, you can create a bootable Windows 7 USB Stick from the disk image using UnetbootIn (must be min. 4 GB). Note: all data on the flash drive will be lost.

No convenient store nearby selling blank DVDs?

Closest place that would probably sell them would be closed now for the day.

I'll do the other one. I've got a memory stick with min 4GB. What do you mean that I'll lose all the data on the flash drive??

I need the files I have on my desktop. I've backed up all I can on my USB's but I still have other things I need to get to.

    Keano! wrote: »

When you prepare a USB flash drive with UNetBootIn, the drive will be formatted and overwritten. All data that are on the USB stick now will be lost. Back up first if there's anything on the USB stick that you need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,030 ✭✭✭Keano!

Oh right, okay, that's grand. Thought you meant I lost all the data in the Windows section of the laptop.

Okay, USB Stick is clean and ready to go. What next? Really appreciate this btw!!! If this works I'll be forever in your debt! :o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,835 ✭✭✭Torqay

    Here are instructions for UNetBootIn.

There's no guarantee that it will work properly from USB, I'd rather get a blank DVD from somewhere.

Basically, it boils down to a repair installation. While usually a safe bet, don't take anything for granted. If I were you I'd first backup anything important on the laptop before messing around with it. And that should include the "Linux side" as well. A repair installation has the potential to nuke your boot loader.

Nothing you should do in a hurry.

OK, thanks man! I'll follow these steps and post the update! Which version of the ISO do I download for Windows 7 though?

And I'm not going to lose files am I by doing this??

Shall we file this under "famous last words"? ;)

    Read my edit above.

Seriously, do not try a repair installation in a hurry and certainly not without a backup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,030 ✭✭✭Keano!

Ok, I'll get a blank dvd tomorrow. What sort of one do i ask for in the shop?

and how can I backup the windows side when i cannot access it? i dont care about the linux side, its never been used and theres nothing saved to it anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,835 ✭✭✭Torqay

    Any DVD R will do.

Can you see the Windows partition from Ubuntu? then copy your user data to an external HDD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,030 ✭✭✭Keano!

Okay, I'll pick one up tomorrow morning and go with it. Too late or what I needed tonight but I suppose I can't do anything about it.

I probably can se the partition... but where would I find it in Ubuntu?

Have you tried booting to "Last Known good Configuration" - worth a try and works the odd time.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IE/windows7/Using-Last-Known-Good-Configuration

Can you use the Ubuntu boot to access your files on the disk, just copy them off and start from scratch...
