Sounds a lot like big end bearing?

Does it increase in frequency with revs?

thanks for replys noise is coming from the top mechanic reckons its airlocked
it wont stay running and is smoky,it sounds like piston is hitting the rocket cover could it be the timing i just paid over a grand for the engine and fitting

Did you or the mechanic supply the engine?.

If it was airlocked I couldn't see it starting tbh.

if the van was air locked it wouldnt run,, did you swap the fuel pump or anything,id be pulling the front cover off and making sure the timing is 100% 05/06 are very popular for jumpin timing and doin top end damage,.what year is your van ??
will the van idle ok by itself or does it cut out and put the glow plug light on?

thanks again, roverjames, yes it gets noiser when revved
aujoimr, yeah i supplied engine got it in kilkenny.ford jedi, not idling auto electrician had to code in ecu so i presume mechanic did not start it, he said e left it idle for about one hour but when he took it for a spin had no power and smoky and the glow ligth not coming on when it cuts out .

Is it diesel knock? It may be a faulty timing advance solenoid, its at the back of the pump.
Or if its a proper engine knocking sound of death well it could be a timing issue with the chain.

thank for the replys mechahnic says its deisel air lock any body ever heard or had this happen to them :(

If a diesel is air locked the diesel is prevented getting to the cylinders and the engine won't start, when the air lock is removed (by priming the fuel system, bleeding it of air in the process) the engine will often run poorly for a short time.

    Knock is not a symptom.

I wouldn't be an expert by any stretch of anyone's imagination but I don't see what your mechanic is on about at all.

most common cause of a heavy diesel knock on the transit engine is as plug said timing advance solenoid on the lower part of the fip but id scan it first and see what faults your getting . sadly cars and vans at the scrappers are there for a reason. been down that road too many times,, they all swear that yoke drove in hear and was sounding like a watch driving in the gate ,,,;)
