Mobile World Congress next week - new HTC phones to be unveiled, and the Samsung Galaxy S3 should be announced within a few weeks of that at its own event.

If you can hold off a month or two (for phones to be announced, released and arrive...) I would. It is what I am doing, have been able to upgrade since December but holding off for the next wave of phones.

I am with Vodafone - it will probably take another 6 months before any new phones will be offered even if they are released somewhere else in the world?

I think that is kind of an outdated view of the irish market, though maybe vodafone are still in the dark ages on that. Phones like the Sensation, Sensation XE/XL, Desire S/HD/Z, Samsung S/SII/Nexus have all hit the irish market very quickly after official release, and I think Vondafone have been as good as any others in bringing a selection of those to market.

GS2 is great but I am now waiting eagerly for the arrival of the gs3 or to see what HTC come out with but all their phones of late have been a bit mehtastic what with the same look and the lack of internal memory being a killer.

Why would you want to upgrade your DHD?
Seriously, you may get a slightly better screen and the replacement could be slightly more peformant, but will you notice it?

I have a DHD and due an upgrade in the next few months, but looking at what is available, there is nothing that is worth the investment of the upgrade.

(although I don't know what the upgrade charge will be for a SGII, I assume it ?> €200).

Now, if you had a Desire, I would say upgrade because you get a lot more memory and you can get a bigger screen which will give you a completely different experience, but changing one phone for another one that is 10% better?

BTW: I am not an authority and I would love for someone to prove my statements wrong so I can make a more informed choice about whether one should upgrade their DHD.

There is a bigger leap than that between the DHD and the SGS2. The desire HD is an old model now.

    Processor
DHD - 1Ghz Single Core Proc
    SGS2 - 1.2Ghz Dual Core

    RAM
    DHD - 768mb
    SGS2 - 1024mb

    Internal Memory:
    DHD - 1.5Ggig
    SGS2 - 16gig

    etc...

Also DHD will probably be stuck on 2.2 now and never get further upgrades, where as SGS2 will have ICS next month etc...

Desire Hd is on 2.3 currently, and ICS was confirmed for it 2 weeks ago!

Fair enough HTC would want to upgrade their site then.

Personally im a gadget addict and change my phone every year... alot of the time it costs you nothing extra because you can sell your old if its in good nick for at least the price of a new model phone on a new contract :)

Thats what ive done for the last 3 phones anyway :)

I was in a similar situation to yourself a few weeks ago. I had a HD and was hanging on for the new models. I was able to get a Sensation in work so I moved to that.

From the HD to the Sensation isn't a huge leap. The phone is narrower and it's lighter. It's also faster. With the bigger screen resolution I use Launcher Pro to give me an extra row of icons which is cool. Apart from that the screen is better but I was happy with the screen on the HD anyway. For me, after being used to the Desire HD for a year I prefer the heft to the HTC phones. I don't really like the weight or the lack of weight on the S2.
Anyway, I'm happy with mine. It's not like the HD was lacking a lot anyway so it's not a huge upgrade. If I had to pay to upgrade I'd wait for the newer models to move from the HD.

Looking on paper, these are pretty big differences, but I do wonder (as I have no idea) whether they make that much of a difference.

For example, what will a faster phone give you - I don't game on it, so opening browser/twitter/media apps is generally as quick as my finger can find the icon, and the delay is in getting the data from the websites etc.
I assume boot up time would be quicker, but I only reboot once every few weeks.

Internal Memory - I have never had a problem with that, and I install a lot of apps on my phone. I have most moved to the SD card but an extra few gig will give me more space for music etc.

I am sure the screen is better but again, do you really notice it after a while?

I really am struggling to understand why I would upgrade (apart from just wanting to).

Good point though about selling it on so it doesn't cost that much extra.

I do wonder if someone upgrades from a DHD to a SGSII or Sensation will they be underwhelmed and really notice the difference (apart from the physical look and feel)?

Anyone upgrade from a DHD to another phone and recommend it for any particular reason?

Done some more comparing of available phones - and really at this stage the only reason to upgrade the DHD would be just for sake of upgrading. There seem not to be any seriously better phones out there at the moment. I had a look at my mates SGS2 - dont even like it so much - DHD feels better. And Nexus does not offer much more.... I reckon best choice is to wait for a new HTC phone model ;)

Hi guys, thinking of upgrading but I'm unsure if I'd be just doing it for the sake of it. With the phones which came out of the mobile world congress what's your opinion of upgrading the HTC Desire HD now?

Depends on your budget but its either the HTC One or Samsung Galaxy S3. If you are looking at a little less expensive then the S2 is the way to go.
