New Bushmills course to be built

Incidentally, the go ahead has just been given to the new Bushmills Links course situated next to Portrush and two miles away from the Giant’s Causeway.

The site is fantastic being genuine linksland right next to a long stretch of beach. David Kidd is the architect which guarantees the design will be bold. I will be very surprised if he doesn’t create one of the 3 or 4 best courses to have been built in Ireland in the last 50 years.

It’s also worth noting that this comes with a large hotel development. I would also be surprised if the consideration of accommodation for a possible future Open at Portrush was not very helpful in the final decision to grant planning.

Saw this on the news last night and as a golf nut I wasn't excited, quite the opposite.

I don't understand why the Minsiter for Heritage gave the go ahead

Would it not be wiser to get investors interested in current clubs in a poor financial state rather then building a course on a Unesco World Heritage site. Imagine it flops!!!

I may be missing some points but I was shocked when I heard this.

I hear where you are coming from Whyner. However, I can't help but get excited when there is the opportunity to add a genuinely world class links to these shores. We've squandered a few of those opportunities that we've had in the past.

I don't think Mr.Kidd will let us down in that respect.

I'd agree with this. A great scoop for NI but it will surely put pressure on the great links in Kerry when it comes to where the Americans decide to visit. Like the name too...sure who wouldn't want to play golf on a course called after such a world renowned distillery - an excuse to bring the hipflask!

Yea I agree with The Architect here, another top drawer links on these shores is a plus point in my book.
And when you mentioned squandered opportunities I immediatly thought of St.Patricks next door to Rosapenna.

I agree... Except I wasn't necessarily thinking about the courses that didn't get built

Getting a fair bit of opposition to the plans locally, I don't see the need for the place myself, we have enough fantastic links tracks in the country, and we have many a new builds going to the wall.
