Signing on after paying S1 stamp

I have been paying an S1 stamp for the most of my working career. Have not worked in last 3 years as company was folded and have been a SAHM since and my husbands wages were sustaining us to a point.

Speaking with friends yesterday one advised that I should start signing on even though I am entitled to nothing as it may affect a State Pension in years to come.

Does anyone know if they are correct in saying this? Or should I be signing on for any other reasons. I automatically assumed when I was entitled to nothing there was no point.
