I noticed this article on RadioKerry's news site. Does anyone know if the full study is available somewhere? I've been a user of this line for 15 years and the journey time reductions were promised for 2000 and have remained at 4 hours + to Tralee so am a bit cynical tbh. I wonder how upgrading Mallow station would allow savings of 30 minutes. Surely faster speeds is the only way? Hasn't all the signalling upgrade of the line been done as part of past NDPs?
Report recommends cutting train journey between Tralee and Dublin by 30 minutes

A new report is recommending cutting the train travel times between Tralee and Dublin by a half an hour. The recommendation is contained in a study commissioned by Iarnrod Eireann into the future strategy for the national rail network. It shows the Tralee routes generate quite strong levels of demand in comparison to its population and this is due to high volumes of tourists. The longer travel times by road from the capital to Killarney and Tralee means customer support is resilient despite the change over at Mallow. The report recommends a relatively modest investment to upgrade Mallow station which would help cut the journey time between Tralee and Dublin by 30 minutes.

I guess there are some similar issues to the other single track lines - delays due to trains meeting at passing loops? Some delays getting a go for the Kerry line at Mallow, plus the line takes a roundabout approach to Killarney (diverges from the N72 and curves around to come in the same direction as N20). Given the local terrain and the zero chance of employing something like Pendolino I can't see much more than handfuls of minutes being achievable.

The 30 minute savings would principally be between Dublin and Mallow.

Is it not a rail system?

Maybe they mean more Direct Tralee - Dublin trains rather than stopping off and changing over in Mallow and making sure the Mallow-Tralee train is already in Rathmore rather than waiting for it to arrive so it can continue?

the only suggested improvement to the Tralee line in the report is a vague upgrade to Mallow which will improve the customer experience. They say the line's topography means a speed increase for the line itself is not feasible.

This si what the Charter says.

"This is a place for discuss rail fan / heritage types topics.

This is also a place to discuss rail industry matters that are non-consumer, non-(hard)infrastructure type topics, e.g. "Trailing or facing points" "Which signalling system is best? and "How should stopping and express services be interspersed?"

If your thread does not conform to these topic-types, please post it in the main C&T or Infrastructure forums and it will be moved here if required.

If you are not here to positively discuss heritage type topics, or if your interest is to criticise the various aspects of rail travel/freight/operation (i.e. if you're not a Rail Fan), this is not the forum for you.
Your posts will be considered off-topic/trolling and you will be banned without warning.

If you're not sure if you should post something or not, you're probably right."

should be renamed "railfan forum" imho

Maybe we should get a moan and groan forum started. Then you can moan away to your hearts content Corktina.

Maybe there should be more consideration given to running the 22000 units in a 'batched' formation, 3 times daily, in conjunction with the existing Dublin-Cork locomotive hauled service.

    Example: 9 coaches

Dublin-Limerick Junction (3 coaches split off and head to Limerick and Ennis, 3 coaches split off and head to Clonmel and Waterford)
Mallow, remaining 3 coaches split off and head to Killarney and Tralee.

The faster service might increase revenue, and maybe justify charging a higher fare, although that might confuse the recently simplified ticketing system.

Splitting trains in LJ like that is not feasible due to the track layout.
