Hi all, I'm heading to America for a week in March, just wondering what's the best way to bring my spending money, don't know whether to bring cash/ leave it in my back account or lodge it all onto my credit card. Any advice much appreciated!

I use my visa debit. Much less hassle and worry.

    Only for a week. Cash.

Bring a card, but also some cash. Enough that if your card doesn't work for a few days that you won't be stuck (occassionally the banks decide to block cards if you're away... 'suspicious activity' or something).

Actually, odd that I didn't think to mention that. I was away in Jan in the States and that happened. All it took was a phone number UB and it was sorted. Their office hours are fairly extended for the international line.

I always let the bank know if I'm going to be somewhere and using my card. One thing to be aware of, if you put moneyin your credit card and it's lost/stolen and the money is taken out of the a/c before you can get it blocked, you will not be covered by insurence for the ammount that was in credit in your a/c. Insurence only kicks in when the card goes into debit.

I tend to top up credit card before departure, always advise your bank that you will be travelling abroad to avoid any security issues. Dont forget to carry some small notes as cash for tipping.

If staying in a hotel, ensure you have cash in a safe in case your card gets stolen. Also look into a subtle money belt (the one that has the same function of a normal belt, but with a "pocket" inside it to insert money into) so you have money to get back to the hotel if all else fails.
