Animal sound?

I was on the Curragh the other night after dark, maybe around 6:30pm when I heard an animal sound that wasn't familiar to me. I think I caught a glimpse of the animal and I have my own suspicions as to what it was. But rather than leading the jury, I'll just describe the sound and hopefully a few people here will know what it was for definite.

The sound was fairly shrill, very loud. It kind of rolled or pulsed in an almost electronic way. It was a little bit like one of those personal alarms people have in case they get attacked maybe.

    Any ideas?

    foxes

Interesting. When I saw your reply I thought 'No way!' but having listened to some sound clips, it is a little bit similar. My idea is a barn owl. I listened to some clips and they sounded somewhat similar.

The sound was fairly close. It gave me shock and when I looked over in that direction I saw something moving really quickly. It was very fast, a low flying bird was my best guess. And it seemed to be a lightish colour. I would have said too fast to have been a fox but it was dark and I couldn't really see anything properly.

I was thinking back, and in the same area I heard barking and I thought someone had a dog running off its lead. But there was something unusual about where the sounds were coming from didn't seem to be acting the way a pet dog would (I couldn't see it in the dark). So I'm guessing it's likely the initial sound was a fox and there was one or more foxes in the area.

Im not familiar with the Curragh at all, but from your description I'd say check out the call of the Curlew maybe, or Lapwing perhaps!
