Hi, so my Macbook air is 2 months out of warranty and wont turn on. I brought it into compub in Dublin for them to have a look at and they said it needs a new logic board costing 900 euro.

I had a look on ebay and I can get a repacement logic board for 270 delivered. I was thinking of doing this and then trying to get someone to fit it. I would usually try these thing my self but I had a look at a guide and it look fairly complicated and I could easily break something.

My question is will these repair shop that are around town replace it for me if i bring them the logic board or would they want to source one?

Im not sure if this is even the right way of going about getting it fixed. Maybe you guys have some suggestions for me??

    Thanks!

Ya replacing the MB of a laptop is a bit of a pain so many intricate things.. I would advise doing it yourself unless you know what you're doing really..

I know apple have an out of warranty service you should get a quote of them also and if there is a number of computer shops in your area try all for a quote.

Also There is no harm in asking the shops if they could replace it and that you have the hardware already. Get a quote for this too.. Thats what I'd do.

But odds are paying 900 to fix a laptop I'd nearly look into buying a new one..at that considering the base model is like 999 you could even fund the extra by selling the parts of the old one or even look into buying a refurbished one from apple that might cost less and would have warrenty as far as I know...that's what I'd do anyway..and you'll get a new warrenty that way..

    When did you buy it?

Thanks for the replies. I bought the macbook in december 2010 so its only 14 months old. Its pretty sickening to have paid over a grand for a laptop and its only lasted that long. My old sony vaio is still going strong and its over 5 year old.

theres no way Im paying 900 to have it repaired. I got a price of 400 for a computer repair place so I might take them up on that. Its only about 100 over what it would have cost me to get a new board on ebay and I dont run the risk of breaking the laptop more plus I get a warranty.

Il have to think about my options.

I think you should ask a mod to move this to Consumer Issues. Warranty is in addition to your consumer rights.
    Try it!

but its outside warranty now. It only came with a 1 year warranty. I had planned on extending the warranty but the applecare is fairly pricey. I suppose it would have been worth it in this case.. :(

Don't let a retailer/manufacturer fob you off if your warranty is up, because even if you never had a warranty, your consumer rights would still stand.
You are covered by the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 which states that a product should be of merchantable quality and last a reasonable length of time, 1 year is not reasonable.

Following this thread. I have a macbook air. It is still in warranty and considering apple care. Would love to hear how people actually fare trying to exercise their rights with the reasonable time. Anyone else successful - such tales may help the OP.

    Hi,
So, a glass of wine was accidentally spilled on my MAc book Air at a party. I dried it out & it worked for 3 weeks before dying and now it won't power on at all.
I took it to CompuB in Cork and they said there's liquid damage to so many components that it would be cheaper to buy a new one than have evrything fixed.
It's only 4 months old, but apple care doesn't cover accidental liquid damage.

I'm faily certain it's corrosion on the logic board that's caused the problem.
I've found a few websites that calim to be able to identify and repair the individual components on the logic board rather than replace the whole board.
Has anyone used any of these services? What was the outcome?
I found an Irish one called repairmymac.ie. Has anyone used them before.

    cheers,
    Marty

Have you tried calling Apple directly ? Their customer support is really good and they may agree to help you out. As mentioned above you would expect a 1200 euro laptop to last more than a year so your consumer rights kick in at this point. Give them a call and see what happens.

CompuB aren't Apple, they have nothing to gain from helping you other than the mark-up on the repair or profit on the sale of a new machine. In general for any Apple product, iPhone, iPad etc. it's always better to call Apple themselves first.

I have to agree with ZENER, call apple, i know people who have called into various apple stores with iPhones, iMac and other mac hardware and they have repaired or offered replacements (iPhones)
EU law also insists they must cover the goods for 2 year, not sure how it covers us in ireland. http://www.pcworld.com/article/252508/apple_loses_first_appeal_in_italian_warranty_case.html

Just to say if the logic board goes in any mac under 2 years old bought within the EU and it wasn't damaged in anyway by the consumer, apple have to replace it for free. My friend got her's completely covered by apple and it was 8 months out of warranty, it's called a consumer claim form in the repair center. They keep really quiet about them and Apple play dumb when you talk to them on the phone until you mention it. If it's apples fault and under 2 years old you can claim for free, you may have to pay an inspection fee but my friend got this reimbursed by Apple.
