hi lads, looking for advice on the above cars
i have been offered a '03 citroen c5 2.0 hdi 8v for a good price, but it has 150k miles on the clock. alternatively i have found an '01 skoda octavia 1.9 tdi with 95k miles on it, and am at a loss on which to go for. both seem good but i want one that'll do the miles with the least maintainance. personally i prefer skoda as i had a golf petrol and loved it, but have been told the 2.0 hdi is a better engine that gives less trouble than the tdi even tho its got higher miles

I'd be inclined to go with the C5 as they tend to be better specced, more comfortable and better value. No real engine issues on either.

If you are judging purely on economy, service and repair costs then the Octavia will probably come out on top. The old VE 1.9TDI is one of the most reliable diesels around. The 2.0HDI is good as well but more complex than the VAG unit so there is more chance of something going wrong.

even with its high mileage? what's the usual mileage a well serviced deisel like this likely to do?

That's an average of 16.6k per year, which is reasonable. You really need to find out which you prefer driving, look at service history, number of owners etc.

If your doing a decent daily drive, the C5 is a far more better place to be.
Comfortable suspension setup and very supportive seats.

11 year old Octavia TDi with only 95k miles on the clock. Without a proven service history with receipts I'd take that mileage with a pinch of salt.

What's the NCT on either? And far more important than the advertised mileage, what's the documented service history?

And if you don't mind me asking, what prices are you looking at for the cars?

You can't go wrong with 1k for c5. You will have some cash left over to sort out nct and tax.
