Hi, can anyone suggest a Moderator for a 17HMR?
I have had a 22lr for a long while and decided to move onto the 17HMR. I use the SAK I had for the old 22lr but still sounds too loud.

It's a supersonic round so you won't get it as quiet as a .22lr, there will always be a crack from it no matter what mod you put on it, think the SAK is the one that most use so the sound reduction with it is probably the best you can hope for.

Lei stainless or blued is the thinnest and shortest and is meant to work best as you can get them made specifically made for .17.
160 quid though compared to the Sak

I had a SAK on my .17HMR and still found it a lot louder than it should have been. Bought a JLS Stalker and it made a hell of a difference. It was €160 but worth every cent. Would definitely buy another one

    sound_moderators.jpg

The sak is on the right on the LEI is the stainless tiny one in the middle.

    Whisper 23.3dB
    SAK 26.9dB
    SM11 28.6dB
    LEI 27.5dB

    How much noise each reduced.

    and over all info

I have a SAK and a LEI. The LEI is quieter. It also shorter, smaller and looks the part on my HMR. Only downside is its not strippable.

img01121vy.jpg There's an article in this months Shooting Sports about the new moderators available from Riflecraft(Hardy Gen III). The rimfire model is available in two forms, reflex and muzzle can. The two mods come out a tad quieter than the control SAK. I'd be interested in seeing the reflex model, just out of curiosity

Is the LEI flush with the heavy barrel? and has it the same thread as the sak?
I was thinking of getting the sak for now and then selling it on when i can afford a LEI

It is the EXACT same diameter as the barrel on my Sako, thats one of the reasons why I bought it. But not all heavy barrels are the same diameter.
Same thread as the SAK, I can pick and choose for the job I'm intending. If I want to zero or shoot a few groups or clays I'll use the SAK as it won't heat up as quick as the LEI after a succession of rounds. Keep the LEI for the bunny bashing.

I have a JLS Stalker too. Very effective but it's never going to be as quiet as a .22 sub. I'm happy with it but I've never used any other mod on my .17 so I've nothing to compare to.

Will a moderator on a HMR affect accuracy and trajectory much?

Some say it improves accuracy. Yes it affects trajectory if the scope is zeroed before the moderator is added.

It wont change the velocity but because the weight of the mod is pulling the barrel down the point of impact will change.

The bullet doesnt touch the mod so it wont effect accuracy but could improve it because there is less recoil.

You either zero the rifle with it on or off stick with it on or off then.
